wow! Never thought of this idea, I'm going looking for mybranches this week!!! You are so creative not mention absolutely halarious and adorable to watch. you better go girl!

  • ink_bottle wrote on March 4, 12:44 pm

I don'y know about the branch.... all the ones i find are so water logged fromthe snow they would snap as soon as they're dry. It's a nice idea but I would probably use a wooden dowel and give it a funky coat of paint.

  • Meg wrote in reply on March 4, 12:47 pm

The branch we found was actually really water-logged when we first found it, but we let it dry out slowly and it was totally fine. If you are still worried about the branches durability, you can add a coat of lacquer.

  • Arle Bordas (anon) wrote on March 4, 12:47 pm

Great tips, totally do-able (and I'm a guy, so...). Plus the hostess is super adorable. Thought it was awesome and I ran smiling to go put curtains up. Meg, you rock out with certain parts out!

  • IndieDesigner74 wrote on March 4, 3:09 pm

really cute clip. i like that she has balanced being cutsy and fun with practical, easy-to-follow steps that make this project (which could feel potentially time-consuming) a painless, fun one. (i also appreciate that she makes quick work of the sewing, so that those of us who sew regularly don't have to wade through the basics...)

i also love the fabric she picked out - the color combo is fantastic. i've never used that fabric website, but i promise you i will now!

as far as a wooden dowel vs a natural branch... it all depends on the feel of the room, i think. there is definitely a trend in the indie/DIY design towards natural pieces that help marry homemade items and commercial ones.

Her website NEST also seems superinclusive of the green movement and recycling, reusing, and reducing waste in a creative way. Bravo!

  • Michelle* wrote in reply on March 27, 2:29 pm

I stumbled on this VERY VERY VERY HELPFUL episode and truth be told, am heading out to gather the (cheap!!) supplies to make my own curtains. I love the format and loved the hostess, Meg. It was such an quick watch and a great way to lean something I might actually be able to do myself. I am not a do it yourself type gal...but now I am rethinking that after watching. Can't wait for the next one. Is there a way I can email in a picture of my curtains to Meg? Thanks!!

I found that bamboo works really well for a curtain rod, as well. It's nice and straight and generally the same diameter all the way along it.

    xo

  • Meg wrote in reply on March 9, 1:14 pm

Tuesday, that is a fantastic idea! Do you have any footage or photos of the result? If so, send them in to tips@threadbanger.com

Hey Meg, what breed is your dog? She looks ridiculously similar to my own chihuahua (deer head or part italian greyhound).

  • Meg wrote in reply on March 12, 2:11 pm

Angel Fire, this question is a source of many conversations. So far, we have determined that Gracie Strudel is part chihuahua, part rat terrier, maybe part miniature pincher?? She is a rescue, so we don't know for sure, and she won't tell us!
Do NOT hesitate to send in pictures of your mutt, and please, everyone include their rescued animals in the footage you send in to Threadbanger. We love to see them!

    RESCUE ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pins n Needles wrote on March 18, 6:15 am

WOW! I did this at my house a few years ago too! How exciting. SO my story was that my dad was doing some gardening and cut off a huge branch from our peach blossom tree. It was so beautifully knarled and our 6x4 window needed some love that the two had to be integrated together. We spray painted it clear to give it a nice shine, added some curtains. It not only blocked all sunlight for us to sleep into the day, it gave the room a personal touch. what was so great about it was the branch looked over to its original tree (the branch can never go home sick). btw your hair is very cute. I recently cut my hair short and i love the low maintainance.

  • Pins n Needles wrote on March 21, 3:00 am

WOW! I did the branch idea a few years ago too. My dad was gardening one day and cut off a huge branch. Our 6x4 looked bare and so to spruce it up we made use of the branch. After spray painting it clear to make it have a nice shine, we hung it up using cute curtain holders (the U looking things to hold the curtain to the side) put up some curtains and it was perfect. Our room looked more personalized and we got to sleep in longer :)

  • Meg wrote in reply on March 24, 8:33 pm

"After spray painting it clear to make it have a nice shine..."

What a rad idea, PinsandNeedles. Clever! Can you send us some footage or photos of that?
