Your home is so stylish! The dog bed looks lovely, as does your little friend. Great tips, great show!

  • handstand wrote on March 18, 4:57 pm

Dogs and Guitars?!?! What more do you need?
I thought the dog bed was adorably brilliant. I've got a couple of old suitcases with broken handles, but didn't want to get rid of them.... Now I have a use for them!

  • cristophine wrote on March 18, 5:07 pm

Awesome show! Only problem is, my dog is bigger than any retro suitcase I've ever seen :( Guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled!

  • Meg wrote on March 18, 6:21 pm

Thank you to all of the furry friends who participated. They made this week super-fun to make!

Wow! Really good idea! Sooo cute and easy. I love all your episodes Meg! I'm getting my first puppy this summer. I'm so excited!

  • Eloquently (anon) wrote on March 18, 7:24 pm

If you go to simplyspray.com they have some upholstry paint that you can just paint right on the couch.

  • pink_royalty wrote on March 18, 8:18 pm

i have a great idea for liz. she cant so...well neither can i. go to your local craft shop or walmart and pick up your favorite faberic. first measure all your arms, backs, and an inch from the floor too top. then get the right amount for your couch. make sure to leave about a foot extra for tucking. then trim the extra string hanging from the cut end. and simply put over your couch and tuck away. Voila! :)

  • Peach (anon) wrote on March 18, 8:21 pm

wow! what a great idea. i am not really an animal person but, i kind of want one now so i can jazz up a rockin vintage suitcase. can't wait to see next weeks episode - would love to see something about jewelry or shoes- i have too many and too much and i am always looking for a stylish way to display and store all my goodies!
    xoxo

  • pink_royalty wrote on March 18, 8:24 pm

oh yeah! and those pillows...just get some of that same fabric and get a few safety pens and pen it together or get some cute retro ribbon and make a few holes and tie it together. what ever you prefer.

  • Cotton (anon) wrote on March 18, 9:13 pm

DIY is cool, Meg is great, and those furry creatures - dog, boy friend and cat clearly deserve loving care. This episode gives new meaning to "living out of a suitcase" and "hanging it up"! Love the changing guitar styles and colors! And nice green St. Paddy's day touch!

  • Valerie (anon) wrote on March 18, 10:31 pm

  • My Girl Thursday wrote on March 19, 4:18 pm

I love the guitar hanging! Maybe I'll proudly hand my GH guitars in our living room. A much better home than the kitchen table.

  • Squidwithstyle wrote on March 19, 4:39 pm

That bed was genius! I'm considering making one for my little dog.

  • Beth Revels (guest) wrote on March 19, 6:21 pm

For a couch that has pillow backs that are attached, I would suggest maybe doing a little hand sewing. Take several squares of fabric, (for the number of pillows you have) and cut them larger than the pillow itself. You can make these really poofy if you want. Next take some elastic and measure it closely to the smallest area where the pillow meets couch. ~hello pillow I'm couch nice to meet you~ Whipstich, straight stich or cross stich the 1/4 edge (0r bigger if your using some recycled old sweet-pant elastic what ever works) leaving an opening to run your elastic through. Once you have the elastic in and a big pillowy square just stretch it over the pillow and your done. Except you should repeat for the number of pillows you have it would look funny otherwise. For the bottom cushions or seat just tuck and cover. For the arms use your grannies old school arm gaurds. Just rectangles of fabric that cover enough of the arm to be worth it. This is about the only idea I've come up with to no sew slip a couch like this. I've done alot of slip covers and the only other way to do it is a lot of work. Also it doesn't have that I just threw a bed sheet over the thing feel to it. If theres any Questions just let me know.

  • cereselle wrote on March 19, 9:12 pm

Puppiiiiiies! And hurray for the pit bull I spotted. I must make a bed for mine own.

As for the couches, it'd help to know what color(s) they are. I'd suggest fabric paint (like Dynaflow, not that crappy squeeze bottle stuff), but if the couches are too dark, it won't show up.

  • Ramonafox wrote on March 19, 9:27 pm

That was awesome! could you do ur next one on spring cleaning and STAYING organized??

  • tomothecat wrote on March 20, 12:46 am

Aw. My cat was found wandering along the side of the road too. She was scrawny and sick. Now she's a happy little chunky monkey. Too bad I don't have any awesome suitcases like that.

  • sewing_sophist (guest) wrote on March 20, 10:20 am

I don't have a puppy. Or a kitty. Just a guinea pig, who probably wouldn't enjoy such an amazing bed. She'd just whiz all over it... :'-( BUT my friends have lost count of how many cats they have, and would probs enjoy one. XD Thanks Meg!

  • sewing_sophist wrote on March 20, 10:22 am

Why in the heck did it say I'm a guest?!? I am most certainly not a guest.

  • Tornpages wrote on March 20, 2:12 pm

Wow loved this episode...will have to go look for a suitcase my cat would love that idea....
Is there something you could make out of old pillowcases??

  • Syd wrote on March 21, 12:35 pm

I need work on my old couch too. I ordered a slipcover for it but it ended up looking really sloppy, so now the slip cover is over only the frame of the couch and the old yucky pillows are still set-in, over it. I think i'm getting ready to re-do all the pillows. I'm going to buy new foam and fabric and attack them like standard pillows with a Hefty seam, but not necessarily an upholstery edge. That should clean it up, with out the heavy labor and skill involved in a full on new apholstery/slipcover. I'll send in before and after pics.

  • makealife (guest) wrote on March 21, 1:25 pm

i loved it and went a head making a bed but it would be nice if there could be an issue more on makig stuff for cats as i find the bed is more for dogs.i ean cats dont travel.

  • Magik wrote on March 21, 3:28 pm

    theres no new episode today?

  • knitwench (guest) wrote on March 21, 9:57 pm

While you are getting fabric, and think out of the box sometimes you can find sheets or bedspreads that will be perfect, pick up some corkscrew pins. they will hold the fabric in place much better than tucking alone. Then, learn to sew.

  • Van wrote on March 22, 10:14 pm

i ran into the same problem with the couches. all i did was go shopping for some cool looking vintage blankets and tucked them into the couch giving it a retro vintage look.

  • Meg wrote on March 23, 1:09 am

You guys are coming up with rad ideas. Tucking vintage fabric, padding the seat, & fabric paint are all great solutions for Liz's couch dilemma. Thank you for all of your suggestions!

  • sewthernbelle wrote on March 23, 9:12 pm

Cool school, Meg! That pet bed is pretty sweet. And hey, it can double as a pet carrier! ...J/K...;)

The pet bed tutorial was absolutely brilliant! I have been scouting for good suitcases everywhere I go now. I can't wait to try it out!

  • Rainshadow wrote on March 24, 6:13 pm

    Dear Meg,
I've recently gotten some plastic storage drawers, and they are basic, plain, white plastic? Got any really cheap ideas (I'm 100% broke right now) on how to decorate them?

  • Meg wrote on March 24, 8:29 pm

Rainshadow, you can cover them with vintage wallpaper or contact paper. Check out Etsy.com and EnderbyNest.com for resources of where to find them.

Thanks for the question. I think everyone has some pretty simple storage items they would love to know how to redecorate.

    With love, Meg

No sew fleece sofa cover - measure sofa and acquire appropriate yardage, in one or more colors and patterns, of fleece. Remove back pillows, cut fabric for pillows (+ an extra ~2-3” on all sides), then use the fleece blanket technique of cutting and tying (to bind fabric pieces together). Cut 2-3” in from outer edge every ~1/2 -1” on all sides, on all adjoining pieces, then tie each pair of strips together. Use the same cut and tie technique to add panels at the arms and back of sofa (and as needed). If your knots are well tied the cover can be removed, washed, and dried without incident. Good luck!

  • Yeesha (guest) wrote on March 29, 8:31 pm

THE BEST! Sooo simple and out of this world cute!!!

  • shadowman357 wrote on April 3, 7:36 pm

if she takes a razor knife she can cut the threads that connect the pillows to the couch without ruining the pillows {ive done it} then find a slip cover and go to a fabric store with the measurements of the pillows and they will so up some matching pillow cases

  • Meg wrote on April 3, 7:49 pm

Great tip, thanks for the helpful info!

um...it's a great idea but my dog is to scared to sleep in or near something that could fall on her (such as the suit case top) is there anything else that i could use besides a suitcase

  • KatAstrofik wrote on July 8, 4:06 pm

My fiance and I are hand drummers. When we're not out banging the drum all day, we use our larger drums as in tables in the living room (covering the heads with glass, of course). And our cats have been sleeping in hat boxes for years (a matching hat box holds their toys).

  • sewtotallycute wrote on August 18, 5:02 pm

thts such a good idea!! we've bought about 3 doggy beds for my dog and he uses none of em he likes to sleep on my bed instead!!! now i can make one without spending like 30 bucks! thanx soo much
