This is the coolest episode of Threadbanger so far. I love the Spring Cleaning and the organic theme. Meg is the green Martha Stewart!

  • cheapfrills wrote in reply on April 2, 11:03 am

Martha Stewart is rather green herself. I mean she's not perfect but I learned about winter gardening from her.

  • handstand wrote on April 1, 2:38 pm

i had no idea it was so easy to make your own cleaning supplies. cant wait to try this at home!

  • Barret wrote on April 1, 2:57 pm

I love it! What a genius idea! It never even occured to me to make my own cleaning supplies. I know that over usage of anti-bacterial cleaners pose serious risks for us as our society grows and we become more immune to them, so finding out that there is a simple, cost effective and GREEN way to make my apartment clean and fresh is absolutely fantastic!

On another note, I actually laughed out loud like a girl when I saw the Gracie dancing clip.

    Workout Dallas. Word.

hey how can i turn a boring room into a punk rock room?

  • videojay wrote on April 1, 3:47 pm

I love the color-coded bookshelf idea.

I second the person who asked about DIY bookshelves. My girlfriend and I are planning on modifying an old 70s entertainment center to turn it into bookshelves, but I'd be interested to see what other people are doing, too. I'll videotape our project and let the threadbanger community know about it when I do.

  • thinlizard wrote on April 1, 3:58 pm

great job! I love the idea of homemade cleaners... oh, and I forgot to thank yall for answering my question a few weeks back. it really helped out... oh and yall should do a show on tie dye- and the harder ways to do it-
can't wait until the next episode on friday!!!! -elizabeth

  • Lizzie (guest) wrote on April 1, 4:20 pm

I loved this episode! What a good idea to make homemade cleaners! Good work guys!

  • Jess (guest) wrote on April 1, 4:25 pm

I LOVED this episode. I have gotten my family into green cleaning and am trying to pull my friends more into it... maybe they will be more open when they realize it's not only good for the enviroment... and you... its economical. You can get a huge thing of vinegar for less than the price of many home cleaners. Just have to deal with that Easter egg smell :)

  • JackieJuly wrote on April 1, 5:06 pm

Awesome videos, Meg! I love this show so much! You may even be tied with threadbanger!

  • ellyzee wrote on April 1, 5:18 pm

  • Peach (guest) wrote on April 1, 6:18 pm

Love it! I love all of the Methods cleaners but, to be able to do it myself is even better. Love the colorcoded book shelf!!!! I want to do that to all my books, can't wait to try.
Looking forward to next week! xoxo

  • graymalking wrote on April 1, 6:42 pm

Thank you so much for this episode, Meg! I didn't know this could be done, really. Now, all I need to do is to find out if some of the stuff you mentioned exists in my country.

I do have a nest dilaema (sort of). I've recently begun painting with acrylics and oil and now I struggle with finding a way to get rid of the solvents I clean my brushes with (acetone and turpentine are the ones I use most). Pouring that stuff down the drain is out of the question, so I gather the waste in a big jug that I keep sealed in my own attic. The problem is I'm almost filling it up and I'm not quite interested in starting up a collection of solvent jugs.

    Thanks for everything.

Isn't there a problem with vinegar? The house smells like vinegar..

  • IndieDesigner wrote in reply on April 2, 2:08 am

The smell goes away instantly. Really, right away.

  • Jana (guest) wrote on April 2, 1:44 am

Just to let you know, that to properly root a plant put a perlite in your container of water to substitute as soil as the roots are forming. This will insure that the roots will form properly for transplanting into soil. Perlite is a natural volcanic rock product found in any garden center.

  • lisafestus wrote on April 2, 12:45 pm

There you go again!Great show.I already do alot of these cleaners. But I do want to ask though. I am a germ freak,I clean all the time. What about getting rid of them. Something strong, that will kills stuff in the bathrooom mostly. I have boys.....

  • Meg wrote in reply on April 2, 12:49 pm

There isn't much stronger than tea tree oil. It is SO strong, that only two or three drops are necessary. It kills germs and MOLD, and will prevent mold from growing. Great for those stinky boys! Add a few drops of LAVENDER oil to get out the stink!

    Good luck!

This episode is super-cool! The tips, the plants, the book idea, the cleaners, just so genius and helpful and hip. LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!

  • Emdev wrote on April 2, 4:02 pm

    Yay! No more chemicals!
Seventh Generation = outside grad student budget
vinegar = inside budget (in fact, already inside my kitchen cabinet)

Does anyone know about making things like green laundry detergent? That might be more complicated, though.

  • ink_bottle wrote on April 2, 6:16 pm

I love the home cleaner Idea, especially the scrubber solution. We've always used watered down vinegar for our windows rather than chemicals, especially beause my cat likes to lick off the condensation in the winter. (though that doesn't stop her from licking the Murphys soap-water off the clean floor). By the way, would the salt/vinegar scrub affects metal surfaces of not rised properly? (thinking salt+metal=rust)

  • Cara (guest) wrote on April 3, 2:05 am

Although I hate cleaning (hate is a strong word, not nice and organic) I may have to whip some of these up before the cleaning lady comes again. She always makes our house smell like bleach and that worries me.
As for the color coordinating your bookshelf, that's fantastic!
I'm going to do it with my parents books first. Teehee.
    Thanks!

  • I LOVE DIY wrote in reply on April 3, 12:35 pm

I hate cleaning too, but these new ideas just might change my ways. Wow, Meg, that is saying a lot. You are literally changing my life.

  • Yellow_Hare wrote on April 3, 1:04 pm

Loved the homemade Natural cleaning solutions!! Do you have any more formulas you can share with us?

  • Banana! (guest) wrote on April 3, 1:26 pm

I just found you guys on itunes and have fallen in love. I'm new to the DIY scene and have some dilemas that I hope you could help with. I have quite a few purses and right now they are shoved in a box in my closet where I can never see or use them. I need a way to effectivly and creativly display my purse collection. Thank you

  • Rachel (guest) wrote on April 3, 4:10 pm

I'd heard about greener ways to clean, but other than vague rumors of vinegar and lemons, I never knew how it worked. This is really useful information - thank you Meg!

  • Meg wrote in reply on April 3, 4:45 pm

Me too, Rachel. I thought it was high time we got down to the knitty gritty of the matter. I have been using both the glass cleaner, the light cleanser and the mold spray in the bathroom. I have been very pleased so far!

A drop or two of eucalyptus oil makes for a refreshing scent. I want to get some lavender oil as well.

  • Catherine (guest) wrote on April 3, 5:36 pm

Another great episode! Keep them coming! Love all the great GREEN tips and ideas :)

  • syd (guest) wrote on April 3, 5:39 pm

I love the cleaner idea! My cat runs and hides when we break out the chemical cleaner and she can't even walk on the hard floors after we clean them until the smell is gone.

  • w_nightshade (guest) wrote on April 4, 7:39 am

Am I the only one who is experiencing problems getting this episode form the iTunes feed?

  • Cotton (guest) wrote on April 4, 8:49 am

I think the quick tips with each episode are great! But you left several out this time --- When rooting your plant cuttings how did you change the glass into a vintage milk bottle? I would like to do that!!! And how do you make that little dog dance?

  • bean (guest) wrote on April 4, 12:56 pm

Meg is my new green guru! Color coding books makes everything look so much neater! I love the Goonies glass as vase. I heart Sloth!

  • bodieschmodie (guest) wrote on April 9, 12:32 am

This was a FABulous show! I have been looking for recipes like this, and here they all are in one place!

I have one question though. I'm a bit concerned that my apartment is going to start smelling like vinegar all the time. Would you recommend adding a few drops of essential oil in lavender or lemon or something? Or would that take away from the effectiveness of the final product?

  • I LOVE DIY wrote in reply on April 22, 12:23 pm

AS soon as the vinegar dries, the smell goes away!

  • photoboothpictures wrote on April 10, 10:45 am

This is thee episode that I've looking for on DIY Organic Cleaning Supplies. I try to buy green but after awhile it does add up in cost. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the super inexpensive tips and formulas. My pocket book can breathe a sigh of relief. And, these ingredients are no doubt natural.

  • I LOVE DIY wrote on April 22, 12:21 pm

    THIS IS THE BEST EPISODE!!!!!

  • Jonathan Hock (guest) wrote on May 1, 10:57 pm

You guys should do a video on recycled bookshelves. That would be amazing; im getting so unorganized! Great cleaning supplies. would it effect them if i put a couple of drops of my favorite essential oils? you know, to make it more scent-friendly?
