I always wondered how you had all of those cool containers as planters, and now I know. the gravel creates a filter for the water. nice work. I love the DIY garden and DON"T LITTER!!!! Love that.
Those are really helpful links. Thank you for sharing Biogems, that is really neat. I don't have much time, but now I can help out a bit more.
And congratulations for the webbie award nomination, that is so cool.
a little earth day tip- Whenever you travel/roadtrip with friends, just remember this simple phrase “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”.
Amazing! Such helpful tips for creating something a little fresh in the home! I have a small home with little light, so whatever I can do to help bring the outside-in is always a big help. Thank YOU Meg for being so green and looking so good while you do it! GO TEAM GREEN!!!
Happy Earth Day Green Team! I love the green tips! This site has some more good tips: http://www.greenlivingtips.com/
Here are some water related tips from me: Turn off the water when you are bushing your teeth, washing your face, or shaving. Water is a finite resource! Avoid bottled water - use a Britta! Participate in local stream clean-ups. Do not dump anything down the storm sewer - it will end up in your local creek/river. Take your car to a carwash that treats its water before disposal - don't wash your car in the street. Pick up after your pets - the poop goes straight to the river!
BeanMachine, these are SO helpful! THANK YOU. Water is a HUGE problem, and we need to save where we can. Keep your water clean by using non-toxic cleaners, detergent and soaps.
I am trying to not be the downer here but I feel like this was kinda a rerun. A few weeks ago you told us about house plants. Maybe you can tell us a little about where to put them and what kind of plant does well in the steamy bathroom or above the kitchen sink. Or how to start an herb garden on your kitchen counter. Perhaps some energy saving tips. Or hey how to build a book shelf or end table out of recycled cardboard. And hey maybe suggest keeping a little "garbage bad" in your own messenger bag or purse to keep yourself from littering. If your a smoker keep a wet towel in that bag to snuff out the butts and keep yourself from catching on fire!
This one is all about gardening, compost, vintage vessels and fertilized soil. The quick tip was how to cut & snip plants. Totally different.
A wet towel is a good idea!

For and herb garden, you can start your seedlings in re-sued egg cartons (the cardboard kind) As a bonus save the egg shell, and then fill them with a little potting soil, and plant your seeds in them. Egg shells are great for compost too. You can probably get seeds at your local nursery, or even the garden sections of stores like Wal-mart, and seeds packets are surprisingly cheap compaired to buying the plants. For a nice variety I recomend basil, mint, parsley, thyme, and chives.
my dad has built his own serious composting city in our garden. He's got lots of different bins he made from recycled pieces of wood (including old wardrobe doors and things) that he uses for different stages in decomposition. He keeps it warm by putting old carpet on the top, and it really is like a sauna in there. He's great is my dad. infact, he's officially been named the composting ambassador for the south west of england. GO COMPOST!
We've also got a huuuge vegetable patch, and we grow chilli peppers indoors so I'm sure you could do that too if you wanted to grow your own veg indoors. There are a whole bunch of vine plants you could grow, like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. it's great fun, organic, and cheap!
I was brought up green, and have been teaching my children and grandchildren ( yes I'm that old, and still a "Headbanger!). We were always taught to use what we had, and pack out not only our own trash, but what we found along the way... I re-use, and re-purpose and defiantly recycle...That was one of the reasons that I found Threadbangers in the first place! My daughter wanted to make a tank out of a t-shirt, and I told her about the site...now she watches all the time too...we are planning a t-shirt extravaganza remake next week with a few of her friends.
Keep up the great work, keep it fresh and "green"!
Lovein' it all!

Happy Earth Day!
Thank YOU Ramona, YOU ROCK!!! I love you and LOVED your letter. I am seriously framing it and putting it up in my home. You give me such hope for the future.
I've been re-using my old beer bottles as vases for small flowers, It really livens up my otherwise dull appartment!
Soak them in some water to loosen up the labels, and then use the soaking water for your plants, since we're talking Earth Day here... ;)
I use old soy milk cartons for herbs! they work great! I cut off one pannle length wise and add dirt and seeds. And ive made my own upside down tomate grower but cuttign the bottom of a gallone jug and hanging it from a bent coat hanger. Go Earth!
oh man. meg is my hero. no seriously. i really mean that. now i am going to go do a swan dive into my pile of hi trees and get some serious tree hugging in. the earth is happy today, and so am i :)
thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!!
Make any day Earth Day. How about spending an hour getting your young gardeners (and those young at heart), excited about plants and nature? I thought your young gardeners would enjoy an indoor gardening adventure, growing the TickleMe Plant (Mimosa pudica). If you want to give your young gardeners an experience they will never forget, consider having them grow a TickleMe Plant. This is the plant that will close its leaves and lower its branches when you tickle it. They sprout in days and can be grown indoors any time of year. Just Google TickleMe Plants or go to www.TickleMePlant.com for seeds and growing kits. This plant has turned many kids into plant and nature lovers. I know, because I grow TickleMe Plants in my classroom. Your children may never look at plants in the same way and neither will you!
Happy Growing,
Samantha
This reminded me of something I always carry around with me - a portable ashtray. There aren't many ashtrays around because of new laws, so I carry one around with me everywhere.
Awesome show. I love plants but sometimes i can totally space and forget to water them until they phsically tell me they're thirsty.
I want to start a compost box in our side garden but we haven't grown anything in there in years due to a mixture of extremely nosy wildlife (groundhogs, skunks, squirrels, birds etc.). The problem is all we havew planted in there int he last few years is wildflowers and last year my dad id a terrible thing and killed all the weeds (the flower seeds were duds last year) with pesticide of some kind. I'm wondering: Is there any way i can save my soil so it can be safe for the plants and future veggie growing?
The speed of the break-ups in this video renders her next to incoherant. Painful to watch. Believe me, I've just invented another password and await my "activation" so i can vote for you. I'm grateful that your own stuff doesn't break up at such destructive places.
I loved the crocheting episode! I was wounding if you could do another crocheting one. I would really like to learn how to crochet one of those slouchy hats. thx so much
so i have a question. how do you make buttons? not like button button but like pin button. tha ones with pins on the back and you can pin it to your backpack and stuff. yeah.
Thanks for the site!!! as usual great show! I would love daily shows- everyday!!!
This year I've tried to do a lot to become more green maybe these are some ideas for easy ways to get started...
1. I've changed 75% of my lighting to the compact flrcnt ones,
2.been using less water when flushing by putting a water filled 1/2 gallon jug in my toilet tank
3. buying what comes in more eco friendly packageing (kroger org. lettuce comes in organic "plastic" made of plant cellulose)
4. make sure to turn off power strips when not in use( saves big $ I use strips for everything)
5. been using my resuable bags to shop
6." Planet" dish liquid and purex natural laundry soap
7. used some borax for bugs not the chemical krap
8. planted tress
9. supported establishments I know care about the future of our world
10. as always ... Reusing found stuff like a good lil threadbanger should
you know, i would love to have a bunch of plants like i have previously had before... but my cat always seems to chew them up, knock them over - basically do whatever she wants with them. i don't know how to stop her. so now i don't have plants.. Help!
I have heard that pepper is a good deterrent for this. My dad uses pepper on his hostas to prevent deer from eating them. Try it and let me know how it goes!
Free Mini Greenhouse-Cut a 2 liter soda bottle 3 inches up from the bottom creating a small bowl. Fill with soil and plant a cutting (the top 6 inches of new growth) from your favorite plant in the soil. Water and place the top of the bottle loosely back over the bottom. The mouth of the bottle lets air in and the top acts like a mini-greenhouse to help your new babies take root! Don't forget to transfer them after a few weeks or if you begin to see the roots through the clear plastic. Happy Gardening!

How inspiring to see a team of people who incorporate style, creativity, green living (and fun!) into their daily lives! Victoria's garden is just lovely - you can sense what a special place it really is. And Karaoke RULES! Kudos on another great show!
i've lost weight since the summer and i dont have the money to go buy 40$ jeans. and they are baggy on my now
and going around school with baggy jeans dont make me look that good. they fit me good around the waist. i dont mind the sewing
My only real question is, after you transplant the plants into their new homes for your urban garden, what do you do with the old flowerpots? Hopefully not throw them away. Grow more plants, maybe?
Of course! When I empty one of the smaller pots, I then plant more greenery from plants I snipped pieces off of other plants that are now rooting. Always bringing more green into the home. Plants clean the air and energy in your home.
