This is the best episode ever! Your house and your guest's house are packed with unique ideas! I'm so inspired and I think I can do a lot of it too for my dorm room. Quelle inspiré!
OH! and btw, quit yealling at meg. Meg is awsome. She do waht she want. She is the only one who can do something like that without anyone but up-tight sheizters getting offended.
There's actually no race stereotype here. Where I grew up, in D.C. and then Richmond, Virginia for college, this look had less to do with race and more to do with where you lived and where you hung out. I've gone from D.C. to NY, both really diverse areas where all kinds of people where their hair like this. Race isn't what's being played at here. It's the look and vibe of cornrows specifically. The ladies who rock them that I've seen are pretty hilarious with their nameplates and 40's. And yes, I have a nameplate and drink 40's so it's not even making fun of anything other than a hair-do and kind of myself.
I was also poking fun at K-Fed. Yes, I made the very bad joke that I was K-Meg. Now THAT is offensive.
take it lightly, as I am never too serious with anything.
Have a great weekend guys!
I loved the map labels (ingenious), the braiding, and best of all the talented work of the homeless guy, perfect touch. Helping the homeless help themselves.
Nice. The braiding tutorial was good to have. I loved the tip on having neon lights for a telephone (but it'd be nice to know how it was set up!)- I'm hearing impaired and can sympathize with people who can't hear the phone ring!
What an interesting episode---braiding made fun AND easy! I love all the wonderful details, not the least of which is the colorful rotary dial phone with the matching princess model! The real treat was seeing the ALONE AT LAST poster. Good job, Meg.
For fabric braiding information do a web search for "how to braid rugs",that is how braided fabric is most often used. They will have everything you need to know and more. They don't sew the fabric except end to end. Dimmers don't work with the eco freindly neon bulbs, all the ones my husband put in are useless now. So if you want to go Green, use several light sources in the room with different wattage bulbs in them.
Hey Meg, I have a question/request. Could you please please PLEASE do a "Painting 101" episode? Thank you!! ^_^ I need to know how to (re)paint a table that I got for 5 bucks, but I don't have latex paint. Could I use acrylic paint and then seal it with Modge Podge? would that work?
When I seal painting I've done with Modge Podge, I've noticed that when it gets hot it seems to stick to other things. So I would think that might not work.
My boo and I have been in the same predicament. I was totally impressed with this aspect of Dave's place. But really, his whole apartment is so inspiring!
I meant to include my co-hosts names in the credits. Sometimes the episode gets finished in the wee hours in the morning, and a detail or two get lost in the shuffle. My apologies for omitting this.
Thank you so much for asking. My co-hosts this week were
BARRET WERTZ & ANIKA KING.
They are amazing. So sweet, so fun, and totally MADE this episode. Thank you, my fan-freakin-tastic co-hosts!
Glad so many people are enjoying the neon sign -- I'll explain how it's set up; quite simple actually. I'm using a device called a telephone flasher that's intended to help the hearing impaired and people who work in loud environments. You simply connect the phone line to it, plug it into a power socket, and plug anything at all into the socket on the device -- then, whenever it detects the phone ringing, it supplies power! The possibilities are endless! In college I connected it to a projector with a film loop loaded in it, pointing out my dorm room window. People could call my number to make the projector display the loop on the side of the cafeteria.
You can get a phone flasher at most radio shacks, or from the smith gear link in the episode description.
i've noticed that a lot of times you have helpers on the show with you, and that lately that one guy (i don't know his name) seems to be in a lot of the episodes, so my question is...
I got the idea after wandering around for 20 min trying to find my car at 3am one night when I had parked it outside of my usual range. Totally started to sweat that it had been stolen. Never again!
Braids have always been in fashion, and this week we learn how to braid fabric. From denim to gold, there are endless interpretations for this technique. Then we head over to Dave's New York nest and pick up 13 DIY tips & ideas.

Hey Meg,
Great Show. I'm in middle school and wanna come to school with a great bag made of braided plastic bags. How would i stick them all together?
OH! and btw, quit yealling at meg. Meg is awsome. She do waht she want. She is the only one who can do something like that without anyone but up-tight sheizters getting offended.

You know wha would be great, an episode on how to turn old stereo speakers into shelving/cupboards.

Why no add some video ho's to further convey the stereotype!

I'm defiantly putting the map indicators in my office...genious
Aww...Gracie has a friend...as does your boo...

Thanks! See the reply I wrote above to niceandshiny's post for how it's done.
Dave has great stuff, great taste.
Meg you are hilarious, cute, fun, and amazing.
Katie + Grace are BFF's. Love that last shot.
umm, i liked this episode. But I feel slightly offended that the hair braid do had to be paired with large gold jewelry and booze in a bag.......
great ! Love the fold-away coffee table !
The braiding was so cool and looked really great as a bag strap and head band. I love the lampshade and table idea too. So many options!
SO many great ideas! You are bursting with them! I love the braids and filing cabinet idea.
And Katie is so cute!
so inspirational as always
The braids look so beautiful around your house! I'm definitely going to try this on a dress. Thanks Meg!
I would love to know how they replaced the ringer on the phone with the flashing neon sign.
Thanks! See the reply I wrote above to niceandshiny's post for how it's done.

Good call.
Can somebody teach me to make a slipcover with arms built into it? I need it for my futon.
Great episode! I'm in love with the fabric on Dave's couch. Any chance on finding out where it's from?
It's a tapestry from Urban Outfitters, $38 -- I just picked up a bunch to keep things changed-up.

This was such a fantastic episode! Really great lesson and incredible apartment in the 2nd half!
In relation to kimcoombs217's comment about the 'helpers'. You should really list their names! (and not under 'special thanks', that could be anyone!)
My boo and I have been in the same predicament. I was totally impressed with this aspect of Dave's place. But really, his whole apartment is so inspiring!

whoah, that phone light thing is the coolest thing i've ever seen!
Thanks! See the reply I wrote above to niceandshiny's post for how it's done.
AHHHHHHH! I LOVE CRAIG THOMPSON! SO GLAD TO SEE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT HIM.
he rocks!
So true. I love "Blankets" and I also recommend his travel diary!
Yes, I read Craig Thompson's travel journal as well. Really lovely. Also look into his first book 'Say Goodbye, Chunky Rice'.
love daves pad!
I love all those tips, what an amazing apartment!
I NEED to know how to do the phone lamp! How do you hook it up to your phone to make it flash?
Incredible idea!

Great look with the braid.. both on your lamp and on you!!
lol did your dog have a mini booze bottle in a brown bag?
oh and has fun as it is to see your hair like that, I would stick with the normal look. Unless of course your moving to LA :P
Thanks! It was so fun, but I think I'll stick with my regular mess on top of my head. But Nike sure did work it on my head!
i've noticed that a lot of times you have helpers on the show with you, and that lately that one guy (i don't know his name) seems to be in a lot of the episodes, so my question is...
why don't you have a more permanent co-host?
Oh my gosh-GREAT episode! There were soooo many ideas I had to get out my pad of paper and start writing them down. Genius, Meg. Genius.
oh and those guys tips were great.. the map idea was really cool, and the car park + phone
I loved this episode too. That where the &%$* is my car was so funny and helpful.
I got the idea after wandering around for 20 min trying to find my car at 3am one night when I had parked it outside of my usual range. Totally started to sweat that it had been stolen. Never again!
Haha, it's so true. My boyfriend and I have done the same freakin' thing before. NOW we won't have to.
LOVED this episode. :)
