love the garden episodes!  I've been wanting to make a tinture for a while, but didn't know how. Now I know.

Where did you find your information for uses of herbs? What other tinctures do you use? Do you just do one drop at a time or do you do dropper fulls? do you use 1 oz, 2oz or 4oz dropper bottles(this will make a difference in dropperful amount)?

This is my fave episode by far! So informative! And Meg I love the idea of doing and indoor garden that you gave Katzilla! I may do that! But! Do you or anyone else have any suggestions on how to do that? I would want it in my kitchen, and its a large window the size of 2 and opens from the sides instead of up and down. Help!!! Also! Do you have any resourceful website or book suggestions for herbs and their uses? I love the idea of tinctures!!! Love your show and style!!

Hey, Meg, I recently got a book on Herbs and their usees which I am absolutely in love with. They talk alot about what you talked about in this show but I was wondering if you knew what a tisane was when using herbs because the book talks about it but Idk what it is.

I like to use a Basil/Water spray on myself as well as my dogs on the hot days outside. It sure helps keep the flies away from my beloved poochies.

Hi Meg! Great segment. What exactly is "tincitures"? Sorry I am sheltered when it comes those things. But incredibly interested. Can you provide somemore insight?

I wish Meg would do an episode on vinegar-based tinctures that are used for external purposes. Apple cider vinegar+ Fresh Rosemary and Mint and the same tincture making process (you need to make it in large batches) makes for a refreshing shampoo rinse that helps hair grow faster, stronger and shiner! Gets rid of shampoo residue as well.

I love my own herb garden so much :) Especially the mint which I use often to make nice hand and body scrubs, it makes your skin all soft, and refreshed.

I love the show, Meg! I am a big herb grower/user, but the tinture thing was new to me. Just wondering,but is there an alternative ingredient to the alcohol? I'm allergic, but would love to try making a tinture. Any help would be awesome and appreciated.  ^.^

Nice meaty episode. That minty fruit salad would be over the top with a spoonful of spiced rum thrown in as well.

I would looove to have a herb garden, but unfortunately my basement apartment makes that rather difficult. I'm certainly going to look into these tinctures, though. I'm also a huge insomniac.

My main use of herbs other than cooking was in spellcraft/meditation.

Personally, I'm more about the aromatic properties of herbs.

I use dried lavender buds in heat/cold therapy bags to scent and sooth....lt's relatively cheap to find it in bulk online.....I also make simple sachets with scraps of fabric and lavender to scent a car or a drawer of prettiness.

I found a huge bush of rosemary in my town. I like to dry tied up bundles for natural incense burning. This concept also applies to wild varieties of sage.

I love herbs and pretty much all plants!!!! Except poisons ones of course but they too serve a purpose in life.... Just not in mine.  I use herbs everyday! I study them constantly and hope to one day get my ND as soon as I get the money some how :o( I have my own garden that I heart so much! Me and Meg would so be friends. Anyways great video!

Also I dunno about nettle but Tequila does clear up my sinuses when I have allergies. ;) But its only like only tablespoon mixed with lemon and honey of course!

I drink Valerian root tea to go to sleeeeep. ALso I have this lavender oil stuff thats supposed to help me sleep and not have bad dreams.

I've just started using fresh herbs last week for cooking.  I love it.  But I would add a wee disclaimer.  only use vodka if you're 21.  There's a lot of kids on this website.

Great show Meg. i have recently become very interested in growing my own herbs (on my fire escape as it so happens, since its the only palce that gets good light in my apt)...my question is, will the herbs die in the winter? how can i keep them alive during the cold months?

Dr. Meg, you're doing an awesome job of explaining the little herbal therapy. I'm a pharmacist and usually recommend nature products, rather than synthetic sleep-helpers, which usually go along with a hangover... now, if you thin out your nettle infusion many, many times you can actullay call it homeopathic, hehe... greetings from heidelberg, germany and the eichendorff-apotheke!

I love this episode!  I love herbs for cooking and for healing, but I always have a hard time finding recipes for medicinal uses.  Thanks Meg!  I haven't been successful growing herbs yet :-(  I don't know if I keep getting bad seeds, or if I haven't found the right place to grow them.  Maybe when I move into my new apartment next month I'll get it all figured out ....

wonderful job! I'm addicted  to your shows (you should make them more frequent) I have mint in my garden but its hard to get a hold of a variety of fresh herbs here. (I live in Egypt) But I always cook with herbs and it is so so wonderful that you made an episode like this.

Okay, I got a little enthusiastic about writing all of this. It wasn't outlawed at all. Kava kava (and skullcap) were under scrutiny (according to Wikipedia) due to associations with liver toxicity. Though, these were federal studies being conducted, which did not take into account that only the kava root was used traditionally by people in the Pacific, and NOT the leaves and stems. Sorry bout the long posts...herbalism is my passion, is my living, is my lifestyle, is my studies.

Valerian did not help with my insomnia, but sure helped my anxiety and edginess. However, skullcap and kava kava have definitely helped me (what a relief!) It isn't advisable to take either in large doses, or for an extended period of time. Kava kava was out-lawed at one point, because I think (and don't quote me), but the FDA has some kind of issue with it interacting with blood pressure. However, the Hawaiians have been using this medicine (kava kava) since time immemorial, and are probably the wisest teachers to ask for info about it. Definitely cross-check a few websites about herbal info if you plan on using any, and try to be self-reflexive about any issues your body might have. Advisable though. We have to start being proactive about our own bodies and medicines instead of relying on pharmaceutical companies, often, the medicines are just mixed with many additives (or their components are concentrated) and cause more adverse reactions, that create a further dependence on the companies. When you need something, ask Mother nature, and chances are, the medicines you are looking for are not that far away. Trust your instincts, and be smart about it! Plants can heal us in a holistic way, and serve as preventative medicines...Mind-Body-Spirit-Psyche (((((((((*))))))))))

Meg I just moved to a new apt (basement...shhh its illegal in ny) and i have yet to keep my windows open b/c the previous tenants "lost" the window screens. if i never find the right size screen at the homedepot? wat the heck should i do?
and as per herbs...my cats still freaking out and dry catnip only goes so far. How can i intoxicate my feline roomie to be more at peace in our new home??

For the last few episodes I have been having problems with it stopping in the middle then restarting.  I can't get it to go past the mint water.  I have a Mac laptop and am running Safari.  Not sure if this is a bug or what.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but I think you have no idea  what "homeopathy" is and just throwing it out as a buzz word.

Chamomile tea helps seems to help if i can't get any sleep and helps with cramps :)
