Floor Make-over for Under $100, Decor it Yourself

Thank you so much Miss Meg for this episode. We're newlywed and have a home dearly in need of a little TLC. I'm just a beginner DIY-er, and your projects are going to make my house a home. Maybe I'll take pics as a "before and after/ Bachelor Pad to Beautiful Nest".

I have done that. But you should have put a boarding down cause I can tell the floor is uneven and with those tiles it will warp the tiles after time. There are sheets that come 4x6 or 4x8 and you screw to the floor and the tile will be smooth.

Meg...You are great! I took you advice and redid my floor with the tiles. I never would have thought about doing that if I hadn't seen this. Even though it was inexpensive it makes a huge difference. I watch you every week. so keep up the good work!

I was thinking something similar...I think some places will let you do things like that. The really lousy places don't tend to...

Are you reommending that renters replace their kitchen floor without their landlord's permission? (Even IF they will be making it better!!) That wouldn't go over very well ... heck, at all!!! ... in the numerous places I've rented over the years.

Awesome! Now I know how to tile a floor :) Can I suggest an episode on making creative seating? We have almost no seating, but no room to fit a couch :(

Very useful episode for lots of people. Another thing you can do is put a 1/4" plywood underlayment down if the underneath layer is really rough and uneven. That will give you a smoother, more even, albeit more expensive floor. But lots of times what you describe works quite well! I've even seen these peal 'n stick tiles go down directly over old, unattractive bathroom floor tile to create a marble appearance. It would be wonderful if we could all have a "Will" to do the labor :>) Great episode! And that Milo Shoeshine is so cute I can hardly stand it. Gracie really has some competition now.

If your landlord does not allow the ripping up and putting down, you can make a linoleum "rug." Get burlap or something similar for backing and put the wood tiems down on it. It can be cleaned like a floor, but also removed by picking it up.

You could also buy some laminate wood flooring, the type that just snaps together. Get enough to do your room in -- if you're like most apartment dwellers it won't be too much -- and then take it with you when you move. No harm, no foul, and your landlord can't make a fuss because it's not permanent and won't harm the original nasty a** floor.

Some sheet flooring and floor tile can contain asbestos. It is imperative that youcheck with your landlord whether of not the flooring in your apartment is asbestos-containing. If it is, leave it alone. The health risks of asbestos exposure include mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.
