3 Steps to Organizing

A couple of days ago, we read 5 decorating tips from Domino magazine, and today we'll read 3 Steps to Organizing.

Starting with a strong floor plan will give your space the structure it needs for you to have creative freedom. Do you guys map out a floor plan before arranging your rooms, or do you just go with the flow?

I do that too!! and my husband thinks' i"m nuts!! well not only for that tho...LOL.... I use this as a starting point every time I move or decide to rearrange the furniture. occasionally I have to do a bit of combining this with a "go with the flow" system...just cause there's room for everything in the places you picked out doesn't mean that the 6' cabinet SHOULD go in front of the only window in the room!! so just keep in mind you might have to be a bit flexible!

When I moved into my dorm(3 m on 5 m), I tried to fit all my things in it on paper first, to see what the best way was. Afterwards, well we just went with the flow :P And this year I have changed a bit in here, 'cause when you use your room you'll find out where it isn't that structured. Thaks for the great shows !!

That sounds really great Meg! I tried to do that with my bathroom since I'm starting to renovate it but I was soooo not right. All my porportions were off! Can you please do a show or blog on how to do a floor plan? Thanx! -wild

- well, why not try finding hte measurements of the furniture/ spacious objects you want to put in your bathroom, then reduce all of the measurements in a set scale. i wouldn't cut out the exact shape of the objects. a simple rectangle with a label would do. then measure the size of hte bathroom, and reduce the size by the same scale. using those reduced measurements, you can use construction paper, and have sort of a bird's eye view of where you want to set everything up. :)

- Hihi I am an architecture student, and I was just thinking, with the program we use to draw houses and stuff, I could use this to give structure to rooms, ... or is this going a bit too far? :D

When I was moving in a studio we did also made a floor plan! And checked out if the furniture I liked from IKEA would fit in, and how! It turned out great :)

When my fiance and I moved in to our (tiny) studio apartment, I made a to-scale floor plan on graph paper, and then cut out footprints of furniture from post-it notes so we could move them around. He thought I was a complete nutcase, but I think it probably saved us about 2 days of moving furniture around in an apartment full of boxes.

- It absolutely does! Before we moved into this apartment 4 years ago, Will and I made a diagram of each new room, and had pieces of paper measured to scale as our furniture. With this, we could see exactly where each piece of furniture should go in the new place. We put masking tape down with labeled post-its so the movers could take the furniture from the van and put it directly to where it was going to live. This may sound nuts too, but it made for a MUCH faster and easier move.
