I wish making skinny jeans were that simple but it's not. Denim, like all woven fabrics, has a straight of grain. If you look at the grain at the bottom of a flared pair of pants you can see the lines running at an angle. This will cause the seam line to twist an not stay straight down the side of the leg. The other factor you have to consider is that most jeans today are manufactured and distressed which leaves darker and lighter spots down the side seams. You can not accomplish that look after you re-sewn the seam.
I actually did the same thing that the girl did to her jeans to some of my old ones to make skinny jeans a few days ago. They're awesome. :D
As of now, I'm just trying to find some stencils to put all over them. I just want something different. Anyway, if I mess these up, I have another pair of the exact same jeans so I can just make some new skinny jeans. :)
The Thread Heads go to San Fran to cover THREAD, a huge showcase for emerging designers. Interviews with THREAD founders, various indie designers, and Rob and Corinne get a punk make over.
You guys never cease to amaze me. Keep up the AMAZING work!

Awesome show, once again. VERY cool sewing mashine (Yes it's a typo.)
