Thanks so much for doing the episode on hats! I love making hats, but until this episode I had to stick to knitted and crocheted hats. I love knitted and crocheted hats, but there's only a few different styles that I like...now I can attempt to make some other styles that I've loved so much but wasn't sure how to make.

  • ladyjane wrote on November 9, 2:38 pm

  • ladyjane wrote in reply on November 10, 2:20 am

Yes! You can felt old wool sweaters in the wash! Just wash 'em on hot, with a little bit of soap, and keep going until they're as felted as you want 'em. Try to have a larger sweater though. You dont' want to end up with a Barbie-Doll sweater.

PS - check out the forum link on the top of the page. :0)

you guys really are the best. There are plenty of places that are either boring, confusing and worst of all only show you how to make ugly things. You're interesting and your tutorials are clear and easy to follow. The very best of all is that you show how to do really cool things.

  • Katika wrote on November 10, 12:33 am

    Hey guys,
Just gotta say I love your show!
Do you guys have any advice on how to get people sewing? I always invite my friends to sew, and they all love it... so how can I get alot more people into it? It's really sad to see all the local sewing stores shutting down and even big stores like Joanns can't stay in buisness. How can I help keep sewing alive?
    Keep on stitchin',

  • April Pie wrote on November 10, 9:07 am

Awe.. you guys were really cute this week... Anyways, I have a question and I'm here right now, so this is where I'm going to say it.

I'm in the process of attempting to get together a DIY/Fashion/Stencil/Costume group in my area (Vermont, more specifically near burlington, where you guys should totally come visit, or better yet come up to the art hop next fall, anyways...) I think it would be great if you could do something on small DIY groups (if there are any) or give us advise on starting one (if there aren't any).

Personly, the advise that I need is on finding a space that won't charge us to use it a few times a month. Any ideas?

Yeah. that's my thought for the day. I have things to sew so I must go.

  • pixieapproved wrote in reply on November 14, 1:31 pm

try the library or a local coffee shop. my local library has a sweet knitting group that meets there every month.

  • Matt Escalator wrote on November 10, 2:23 pm

Great show as usual! (Actually... It gets better every time, so never mind.)

Hey, I was wondering if you guys can think of anyways to make a scarf... a beanie (with cap. idk what's it's called but anyway,) and pair of arm warmers. Can you do that?

    Thanks,
    ME.

  • ladyjane wrote in reply on November 11, 1:28 am

Hi, Matt Escalator! Check out the Your Projects section of the forums. (Look at the top of the page, above the BurdaStyle ad, and click there) I know someone posted his tutorial of how to make a beanie (I think from a t-shirt?) It's a really great tute with plenty of pics.

  • curexjoy wrote on November 10, 2:58 pm

Awesome loved the show. i just don't understand how you would sew on the bias tape exactly on the inside of hem of the hat?

  • humblebumbleb wrote in reply on November 10, 3:24 pm

Ok so you need single fold bias tape. Your going to iron the fold out on one side. Sew the side you just ironed flat to the right side of the hat with the folded side if the bias tape facing you. Make sense???? now you will turn the bias tape to the inside of the hat so that the folded side of the bias tape is now against the inside of the hat and sew. I hope that helps a little. I think I may confuse you more, but I hope not!!

  • curexjoy wrote in reply on November 11, 12:57 am

no it actually makes sense belive it or not!! if you go along with the video :) thanks a bunch.

  • humblebumbleb wrote in reply on November 15, 7:18 am

I've not made any for kids, but it shouldn't bee too difficult to alter the pattern, maybe just take a few inches off, like have the brim part 8" and the crown part 5" on the straight side and 2.5" wide. Good luck, Its so cute she wants one.

  • jsedai_77 wrote in reply on November 15, 1:02 pm

  • jsedai_77 wrote in reply on November 17, 5:39 pm

ok humblebumbleb here are the best working measurements I've been able to make a hat out of..brim 6.75 long then 1.5 on the narrow side and 3 on the fold. the top of the hat that you suggested worked out fine thanks again!!! she's got hers on now and won't take it off!!

    Dear ThreadBangers,
I am not talented in the sewing department. I still adore you and your show. My daughter and I have a company: Fashion Outlaws. We crochet hats! Our design work is based in natural fiber yarns. We adorn with recycled toys, ribbons and organic found objects.

While our work is very different than what you do, I want you to know that we gather much inspiration from the TreadBangers' community.

As hosts, you are both oh so sweet. Thank you.

Regarding STICH, in Austin, Texas, I was there. How come I missed Y'all?

Loved the hat tutorial and the cuff tutorial from a little while back. Accessories are cool and manageable projects. Any experience with melting plastic bags to make stuff? Oh, and thanks Corrine for the musical interludes.

Whats bias tape,..how does it work? AHAHAAHAHAAAAAAH

  • humblebumbleb wrote in reply on November 15, 12:26 pm

bias tape is simply fabric that has been cut on the bias (diagnal). It is sold at fabric stores. The kind I use is called singlefold bias tape, it is folded once on each side. I iron one side flat, sew that to the right side of the hat, then turn it to the inside so the part that is still folded is now against the inside of the hat, and sew it on. If you cannot find bias tape, you can use anything (lace, trim, or just a strip of fabric). The bias tape just makes it look really clean and finished.

Great show this week! Can you have more episodes with projects that come from old unwanted things. Like that purse made from thrift store clothes. Anything that will be cheap because I'm oh so broke. :( Also, I just got my first apartment! So what about some house fashion stuff?!

After seeing your shrug video, I march straight to the thrift store and bought a fuzzy peach sweater with a v neck for my 10-year-old daughter. With a slight variation I followed your video instructions and it turned out great. I'm now hunting for a sweater that will work for me. Thank you!

Hey! I just discovered you all on accident on youtube and found my way to your site. I LOVE this video, the hat is AMAZING. I personnally have been sewing off and on for about 2 years and was beginning to get frustrated to the point of stopping again but you both are now my inspiration! Thank you! (oh, and do you all have any videos on making sleeves for fitted shirts!? i have horrible experience with those) much love!
