hmm i cant find a cheap sewing machine it sucks

I found my Great-Grandmother's Singer BRK12 1940 in the attic. It's a beautiful machine and still does the job. All of my Grandmother's clothes were made on it so I feel like I'm continuing the tradition when I used it :)

The thing about buying an old sewing machine is so true. Because clothing has become so cheap, people no longer sew on a daily basis, and sewing machines now are built for hobby sewing (unless you lay down the big bucks for a professional one). In the 1950's mending clothing was a daily chore (at least in my mom's family), and sewing machines then were built to last. I still wish I had my mom's old Singer from the 60s.

I love, love, love this site, I live in England where recycling clothing doesn't seem to be catching on but i am finding allsorts of items that i couldn't bring myself to throw out and thanks to you guys i am so inspired to recreat my wardrobe without spending a thing. Thank you, maybe sometime I'll be brave enough to show some of my projects.

Thanks for all of the fantastic tips! I still sew on my Grandmothers old Elna Supermatic machine from the 50's (it's older than my Mum!), and the last time I had it serviced, I was told that as long as I keep it oiled, it will keep on sewing and sewing forever! Also it's lovely to use a machine that has lasted for 3 generations, and looks beautiful sitting on my desk. I definitely recommend looking in thrift (or Op Shops) stores if you're in the market, so many beautiful machines!

i saw the saddest thing today!!!! i live in paris (france) in a kinda shabby neighborhood, and when i was walking home for school, i saw a big box of neglected clothes !!! ;...( you threadbangers should come scavenge here !!!!

I'm surprised that none of them said to guard your fabric scissors with your life, and threaten anyone who might steal them and cut paper with them!

I've been sewing for probably 30 years, and I'd never heard the whole "looping on the top means bobbin / looping on the bottom means needle." What great advice! Thanks!
