here are some great ideas of how to make/buy eco-friendly school supplies!!! First to make note books all you need to do is take all of the notebooks you have around the hose and put em' in a pile. rip/tear out all of the blank pages and cut them to the size of paper you want in your note book. take card stock or card board and size that about 1/4 to about 1/2 inch bigger than your paper. poke holes through your paper and cover.**make sure all the holes will line up** tie with a pretty ribbon or yarn and decorate the cover however you want!!! if you go to smencils.com you can buy 100% recycled pencils that are made of paper and they have many different scents. also to make your own pencil case.. take a few juice pouches (like kool aid)(about 8) and what you do is glue them to gether and take some velcrow and glue it to the top of the bag and wah lahh! you have a pencil case 100% recycled!!!
if anyone lives in or near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) there's a school and art supply store chain called Midoco that is pretty awesome and sells a whole bunch of eco-friendly stuff!
I work at Staple's and this year we started selling tons of "Eco-easy" products there really cute and affordable we also sell eco-easy bags to keep those plastic bags off the streets ^_^ i hope the link works
Don't forget to take inventory of all your supplies left over from previous years before buying more. You'd be suprised by the number of pencils and erasers I've found after cleaning the house. So reuse what you got first.
i agree with ink_bottle, after a recent move i discovered that i have a gillion pens and pencils lying around the house, so i don't think i'm going to need any for a while. i think i might also make a notebook out of various sheets of mismatched notebook paper. i'll post as soon as i'm done with it.

For all the do-it-yourself types: www.diyplanner.com You can download their planner templates for free and print your own customized planner on recycled paper. Only print what you need and use. The site rocks!
For all you Australian kiddies, try www.biome.com.au. They've got recycled paper pencils, notebooks whose covers are made from old tyres, staple-less staplers, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Their store is just down to road from my work, and it is the bane of my existence on payday.
Target is going green with many of their school supplies. And for clothing, shopping second-hand is so much more fun at consignment stores, like Plato's Closet, or if you live in Tacoma WA, Junior Bizzare has awsome retro clothing for just !
if your looking for some good smelling earth friendly pencils you could also check out these pencils called smencils there made out of recylceled newspaper and come in a variety of scents, bubble gum, root beer, etc
