How to make Steampunk Goggles, Threadbanger

Shoe polish doesn't actually dye leather.  You need to use leather dye which you can get at any leather store and most shoe repair stores.  It comes in lots of colors and is cheap.  Don't get in on your skin because it can cause paralysis.

If you cut off the top of the gaterade bottles and use them where you used the caps, you can make interchangable lenses that screw on and off.

Nice. I used the rims of canning jars- no cutting clean lines (very cheap).

I couldn't get the glue to stick for the baseball leather.  So instead I put some bolts through the cap with nuts on the other side, I tightened the bolts onto the tabs of leather.  Kinda worked and looks very steampunk in my humble opinion.  I also didn't glue the clear plastic in.  If you cut it right you can get it to stick in there pretty good

What kind of glue did you use to attach the bottle caps to the baseball? I use Gorilla Glue and it didn't really work too well, the leather had taken shape to the clip I had to use to keep it in place, and it dosen't want to stay together. Any suggestions???

Looks great. I gave it a go and tried some modifications which made it look extra awesome.
Instead of a baseball, use a soft ball. Then, get 2 cans, and cut the inside of the top off, and cut the can following a pattern of a curve (the basic template of which can be found http://fenris-the-red-wolf.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Goggles-A-Tutorial-91226763 ). The rest of the instructions, including the flaps to hold the caps on, all apply. But the tabs need to be cut all the way out to the edge of the cans. 
Also, I found a thin leather belt at a thrift store, and both the ends of the belt can be cut and sewn onto the goggles to use them as the strap, and then you'll get a cool buckle to adjust the size.

I think you could use black or brown shoe polish instead of spray paint, too, since the baseball is made of leather.

I was wondering, could you possibly replace the baseball, with say, a tennis ball, cause i have like 15000000 laying around my house and i can't use them for tennis anymore.

love this, but i would use a hole saw for making the hole in the plastic lids - it would be neater and much safer

Just finishes mine!! it looks awesome and i did have to improvise on some things but that's what makes it my own!

I'm definitely going to try this.  Although, I'd recommend brown and brass-colored spraypaint instead of black and silver.  It's just more steampunk.

super fun to make! mine are a little shaky tho for a first try. ill just have to make another pair i guess...  :)

When I made the steampunk goggles, I used a cool belt for the strap instead of the hem of the jeans leg. It's cooler and more practical.

Not too many baseballs in the shops (or my house) as I live in England; I'm wondering if a tennis ball will work, the seams are similar shaped at least. As for garotade lids, well I don't know what gatorade is. So I guess I'm just looking for lids in general.
Great vid though - I'm dressing steampunk for my 18th party and I had no idea how I was going to get goggles!

i actually found this on instructables about a year ago. i used a hem from material that was already black, so that saved some painting. also, instead of just fitting the strap to my head, i used some velcro i had lying around so that i could wear them on top of my head, over my eyes, or around my neck. overall, it's a great little project. i get compliments on them all the time. ^^

and? if youre going to criticize....why not just save a second and look up something else? i think its pretty awesome. next time i have gatorade ill be making some. ^_^

Not bad. I think the jeans are good but I personally would use a leater strap that I can adjust to either my head, or I can wear around my hat. Alos, I think it would look more like steampunk if the metalic grey was replaced with something to maki ir look like brass or copper. Most steampunk think are made from brass and copper. 
Other than that, this is actually a really good way to make steampunk goggles!

if it dose cost 4.50 a nut then you can buy one from ebay for 10.00 dallor.

Can you use a softball. I know they are bigger then a baseball

coat hangers and a trash bag...contruct the wire frame first with a pair of plyers and coat hangers, stick the plastic bag inside your zepplin and inflate with a bike pump...viola. Paint and your done.

seeing the baseball get ripped open gives me a cool idea. Think you could make cuffs out of the two flaps that got ripped off? Sew a soft material on the inside and thread some wire trhough it to keep it stiff. anyone want to try it?
