Wedding Cupcakes for the DIYer on a Budget
In honor of DIY Wedding Month and the birthday cupcake I got to eat at work: save on an expensive wedding cake and make your own cupcakes -- which can be done beforehand and are easier to transport than a cake.
WARNING: these photos look delicious, but are not edible. Nor does any of this require any sewing.
Not into the traditional wedding cake? Make personalized cupcakes or a cupcake tower. Bakerella has this great how to cupcake tower, which makes it much easier to display a couple dozen cupcakes. Bakerella also has how-to recipe for making cupcake pops, which are perhaps not appropriate for a wedding but look delicious and I want a few.
Make your cupcakes more decorative by adding a filigree wrapper to each -- pretty, but not horribly cheap. You can find variations at PaperOrchidStationery.com.
My absolutely favorite cupcake book is Hello Cupcake (available at your nearest bookseller or online). It goes beyond the pretty cupcake with step-by-step instructions to make your cupcakes look like owls, puppies or even a glob of mashed potatoes and gravy.
And for more inspiration, here are some stellar cupcakes (thoough not all are for the beginner decorater):
And finally, whatever treats you make or include in your wedding, make sure they are Fair Trade. NaturalCandyStore.com has items that are organic, Fair Trade and/or Made in the USA, like these Milk Chocolate Hearts.
