Weekly DIY Roundup: Paper Quilling!

I came across this Craft: blog post about Nava Lubelsky's quilled paper artwork yesterday, which inspired me to look further into quilling! Above is Nava's work made from her 1998 tax file, and below is a detail shot of her piece made from cut and shredded rejection letters:

So, if you want to get started trying quilling for yourself, Craft: has a 101 article by Ann Martin, that takes you through the basics, and then gives tutorials for a couple of specific projects. All you really need to try out this craft are quilling paper (but I'd imagine most any paper will work, shredded or cut into thin strips), some standard craft supplies, and this quilling tool:

Ann Martin is a quite prolific quiller - you can see video of her on the HGTV show That's Clever, helpful if you learn crafts best with visual help, and she gives a how-to for the show project on that blog post. Also on her blog, All Things Paper, she shows us this amazing Ring of Keys piece she made with quilled paper:

Martin did another quilling how-to for Craft: during their yarn month - I love the yarn flowers with the quilled paper leaves on this place card:

Also on Craft: is a free pdf download excerpt from the book Twirled Paper - it shows you how to make this octopus and angel fish, as well as several different quilled shapes, to be used in different designs:

Kristin at Craft Leftovers has a great quilling how-to - she uses recycled junkmail for her leaves, awesome!

Over on Instructables, you'll find a quilled butterfly tutorial by SugarTeen52:

Reshmi Nair tells us in detail how she made this super cute quilled bunny with flowers:

Those are all the tutorials I've found, but in my searching I found a bunch more amazing eye candy quilled artwork! I'm totally blown away by Yulia Brodskaya's incredible work, found on Curbly (click to see it bigger):

Skull-A-Day posted this awesome quilled paper skull:

I am absolutely loving these quilled butterflies by Claire of Claire Art - click the link to see them all, and see them bigger (there a ton of them!):

There's a great quilling flickr group with lots of inspiration, like these flower pieces by martinaquill:

And I'll leave you with this vintage goodness, Hazel's New Designs for Quilling from 1974, on Cathy of California's blog:
