Forum Tutorial of the Week

POSTED BY Lindsey Chen, 13 November 2007

For all of you who aren't members of the Threadbanger Forum, this is what you're missing! We have some awesome tutorials from fans such as this really cool hoodie vest. If you recall on Threadbanger's How To Tuesday over the summer, Rob showed us how to make a vest shirt.... well DIY Superstar Kate went one step further and added on a hood! Check out how she did it below.

Oh and if you're not a member of the forum, join now!

"I was inspired by Rob's video about how to make a vest out of a shirt so I made my own! I took it a few steps further and I'm so pleased with how it turned out! I'm calling this a "brief" tutorial because I'm going over general instructions, and not every detail. But you'll get the idea.

I took an old shirt of my husband's and sewed it and cut it until it looked like a vest that would fit me. It was fitted around the middle, flared out at the bottom and the bottom edge is rounded so the sides are higher. I then cut up the shirt into pieces and made pattern pieces out of newspaper from them."

I wanted a real retro looking vest, so I bought this brown and pink and orange stripe and cut the pieces out on a diagonal so that the stripes would go down towards the middle forming a "V" on the front and back. This took some time cutting out the pieces so that my stripes would meet up in the middles and sides, but it wasn't too hard.

I cut the same pieces out of my lining fabric and sewed batting to the main fabric pieces and attached a zipper to the front pieces, being very careful to line up the stripes. I also attached pockets to the front, making the stripes vertical and meeting nicely with the stripes on the front piece.

(I'm trying to figure out how I want the pockets to look in this picture)

I then made two vests - one out of the fabric and batting and one out of the lining. I placed the main fabric vest over the lining vest, right sides together, and sewed around the front edge (zipper and hood - don't sew around the bottom edge).

I flipped it inside out (through the bottom) and sewed closed my arm holes and the bottom edge.

Then I cut out a strip of orange fabric, folded the long edges inward and sewed it over the raw edges of the bottom. Kind of like sewing bias tape to finish the seams.

The arm holes were a little different. I didn't want the orange showing on the outside, so I kind of made a facing to finish those edges. I sewed the orange strip to the arm hole raw edges lined up and right sides together.

I wrapped the fabric around to the other side,

folded it in

and then folded that whole piece at the seam line so that all of the orange was on the inside.

I stitched it down

and voila! A beee-utiful retro hoodie vest!

The matching of the stripes, especially on the pockets, gives the overall vest a very professional and finished quality.

    Fantastic idea, design and execution.

Yay! Forums are back, here's the watch: http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?p=33472#post33472

Thanks Lobsticles, that's really nice. I didn't want to just slap pockets on there, I wanted them to add something to the piece, too.
