Runway to DIY: Headwear!

POSTED BY Morgan Hungerford, 14 December 2007

Remember this spring when everyone went CRAZY for the Prada turban? It was EVERYWHERE and in EVERY MAGAZINE until one day it just wasn't - the sheer novelty of it gave it a very short shelf life! But for those of us who appreciate a little quirky eccentricity (a la Little Edie Beale [of Grey Gardens fame], pictured above), it was a great inspiration to start exploring different headwear options! Over the last year or so I've been drawn to all sorts of makeshift dome-decorations, and in the interest of pooling our collective DIY fashion knowledge, I thought we could dish...

...One of my favorite places to look for headbands (and I mean the kind you tie AROUND your head, not the kind you wear on top!) is in the notions section at the fabric store. You can pick up everything from delicate braided rope (for a Grecian-influenced look) to thick, elasticized bands of sequins (perfect for New Year's Eve, right?!) - not to mention ribbons in EVERY COLOR AND SIZE IMAGINABLE. Don't you just love notions??

...If you're anything like me (and I'm sure you are) then you've amassed quite a collection of scraps from all your sewing projects. Take a cue from Alicia Marin of Unico Creations: in one of my favorite ThreadHeads episodes, she gives a great tutorial on a "yo-yo stitch" (it turns a little circle of fabric into a really cool, 3-D embellishment that you can use for quilts, or pillows, or YOUR HEAD). Make a bunch in varying sizes (feel free to go crazy with different fabrics, too, but how chic would all one jewel tone be? I'll tell you: VERY CHIC), stitch them together into any pattern you like, then ceremoniously attach it to the side of your head with bobby pins. Gorgeous.

...And of course, there's always THRIFTING! Remember all those bow-covered barrettes you threw away the summer after sixth grade because you were TOO COOL? I do. And I really enjoy the fact that I can buy them back now for like a dollar. Rummage for bright colors and interesting shapes, and don't be afraid to go a little nuts with them. My very favorite thrift store barrettes are THIS fancy black one (thanks to Page Billauer for the photo) and THIS sassy blue bow, which I removed from its barrette backing and bobby-pinned up so it stood at full attention. I've worn both more times than I can count, and I think they were only about a quarter each!

So...share! Do you have any awesome headwear ideas or tips? And if the turban didn't do it for you, have any runway trends ever inspired YOU to go DIY??

:D Personally, I'm a big fan of the hair clip... lots of them, in bright colours, preferably at least 7 at a time. Lolita headdresses are really nice too, giant alice bows and bonnets and such ^^
