How To Make Vintage Jeans Using Coffee Grounds

POSTED BY , 10 May 2007

It's amazing the things you can find in the dumpster. We found some expired coffee grounds that were thrown out and decided to use them to making an old pair of worn out jeans look vintage and hip. Below, we'll show you how - including a video of the whole process at the bottom!

Check out our website or subscribe to our videos on iTunes so you can watch all of our episodes and how-to's.

1. First off, to make the dye, you will need 2 bags of coffee grounds (About 10 oz each), preferable Espresso.

2. Then, get a 3-5 gallon bucket. We got ours for free at a local ice cream shop, but any kind of bucket should work.

3. Next, you will have to make a filter. We used some old stockings that we cut the tops off and filled with the coffee grounds. Then make sure you tie the tops tightly.

4. Put the coffee - grounds filled stockings into the bucket and fill it about 3/4 to the top with hot water. Make sure there's enough room for the jeans without the water spillingover.

5. Let the coffee brew for about 15 to 20 min. Note: The darker the brew, the darker the stain.

6. Then drop in your jeans and let them sit overnight.

7. The next morning, take out your jeans and throw them in the washer and dryer.

8. Congratulations! You're all done!! Now you've got a nice, light brown tint to your jeans.

Want an even more 'vintage look' in your jeans? Here is how to make them distressed.

1. Grab some sandpaper and a couple random objects with a hard surface such as coins, cell phones, mint tins... etc. Put these in the pockets and sand around the edges!

2. A cheese grater makes a great addition to the smaller abraisions and gives it lots of texture.

3. Or, you could even run them over with your car!

4. Now you've got yourself a one of a kind rad pair of jeans for little or no cost.

this is awesome but im wondering if the pants will always smell like coffee. i know it has a very strong smell that might lock in with the stain; i wonder what would happen if you put good smelling stuff in there with it, maybe the smell would over power the coffee and give it a good smell...
also i wonder if you should keep the sock in wile you sit the pants in over night. wouldn't that continue to make it darker and make it to dark.
i would really like to try this
just wondering about those things has kept me from that
and the fact that im 14 and i barely ever get to go to the store not to mention make money to buy anything

yeah, so i just tried this and it totally didn't work very well, i left the jeans in for 2 nights and they are barely brown, they look more unwashed then vintage
    boohoo

the key is to make your brew reallllllly strong using a buuuunch of coffee. also make sure the dye bath is hot. it doesn't really matter how long you leave the jeans in, it matters more that your brew is strong. also you can add a bunch of salt and that will help out as well. sorry it didn't work that well for you the first time.

i dont think its supposed to dye ur jeans brown, just tint them. i htink that if you want brown jeans youd have to actually buy brown dye

Hi, THat is exactly what I have been waiting for, a video that would teach me how to tint my jeans brownish but IT"S NOT working. please tell me why after I washed my jeans with cold water and dry the jean goes back to the ugly light blue and not the beautiful brown like when I first take it out of the coffee. Please show me how to keep it brown even after i wash it. thanks
