Hat Trick

POSTED BY Morgan Hungerford, 13 February 2008

No matter how low the temperature outside, I just can't stop looking ahead to Spring (I work in retail - you really can't blame me), and I've been thinking a lot lately about the upcoming season's hats. While I'm definitely excited that fedoras aren't going anywhere (though you couldn't have ripped last summer's straw version away from me if you'd tried), I've lately found myself building future outfits around a floppy, wide-brimmed, 70s-inspired topper. Before you think I've gone all J.Lo on you, here's a quick INSPIRATION reminder:

If past-decades style icons aren't doing it for you, you can find more modern inspiration on the Spring '08 runways. Floppy hats were shown everywhere from Marc-by-Marc Jacobs to current NY darling Chris Benz's show. You can snag one for YOUR summer look at Forever21 or Urban Outfitters (amongst other places, I imagine), or you could go the DIY route and appeal to ThreadBanger forum member Ivy Frozen for a pattern - her cobalt blue number is a stunner.

What Spring/Summer accessories are YOU currently digging??

Loving big hats, but it has to be massive sunglasses. They hide all sins after all.

Surprised to see a link to Forever21 on this site. It's my impression they sell cheaply made clothes at the expense of cheap labor. see Corinne's link to "stuff" movie. Even Urban O. is a bit of vintage DIY rip-off. Learn to make it yourself or go to Goodwill.

So I am pretty sure spring and summer is when I bust out my totes. In the winter I usually have a small clutch or my backpack on school days... not much of anything I need to carry. But spring summer? I need something to carry those novels, frisbees, dog leash, water bottle and etc, etc....

we should figure out how to make them!

Cotton jaquard dresses and pencil skirts will be my spring splurge. Perfect for Peter Island! Milly has a fun spring line out. A lot of the collection would go great with a floppy hat- a classic piece! Afterall many legendary designers began in millinery- including the very fabulous Coco Chanel.

the girl who made the pill box hat should give this a whirl and let us know how it goes...

I don't like fedoras much either, but there are 2 floppy hats in the forever 21 section while there are 5 fedoras. So it must be going somewhere.

Ooh! I love Faye Dunaway's hat. Thanks for the love for my hat. You can check out my full response in the forum post, which basically says mish-mash some tutorials already online (Corinne made a floppy hat in her pirate costume tutorial) or buy Eugenia Kim's Saturday Night Hat, which is what I used.

Big hats that are great on most people look silly on my massive head and even bigger hair... :/

That Faye Dunaway photograph is perfection. Good call, Morgan, great piece. I'm all about some hats.

I adore what you guys are doing, but in the future please try to link your loyal band of us followers with online stores that don't happen to be huge, faux-hipster, fashion traps. My reason for this is because of the fact that LABOR issues come to mind, as well as the quality of the stuff your buying; another huge faux-hipster company is famous for doing this: Starbucks/Jamba Juice/Quizno's -Jamba Juice is supposed to be healthy, but any vegan knows you can't have hardly anything in the place, and that they put ice cream in most of their smoothies, Starbucks is... well please see the many expose` videos on youtube. I feel like a jerk even writing this because of the fact that I have clothing in my closet from forever21, and urban outfitters that I bought three years ago -before I thought about this all- because of the conveince and the great price; now I think the moral price of it was way too great. Sorry for ranting on like this, but please, oh please, try to find stores that aren't trying to take over the world. :D

is a pretty rad printing company based out of Philadelphia. Not only are they a full service design company, but they also have some pretty cool pre-designed clothing and accessories.
