Corset Pattern

POSTED BY Corinne Leigh, 08 February 2008

(thanks to our new intern Melinda for making this awesome step by step!)

1. First, measure your front from the top of your bust to your waist. draw a line on your pattern paper with that measurement.

2. Next, take your bust measurement subtract 2 inches from that measurement and divide that number by 2.

3. Mark the half way point on the top line. Mark a point two inches to the left of the halfway point and 1-3 inches down (1 inch for A cup, 2 inches for B cup, 3 inches for C cup and so on). Mark a point on the quater point of the bust line.

4. Measure from your underarm to your waist.

5. Measure your waist and subtract 2 inches from that measurement then divide that number by two. Mark that measurement 2 inches below the dotted line.

    (1) Corsets will keep their shape better if they are boned along the eyelet edge. For a front-laced "fashion corset" (such as the one created here), normal plastic boning from the fabric shop will do. Turn the garment, leaving at least 1" unsewn on either the top or bottom edge. In from the center front, sew a channel about 1/4" wider than the boning, stopping about 1" from the unfinished edge. Cut two pieces of boning to size about 1.5" shorter than the front seam, and slip one piece into each channel. Finish the open edge. When you place your eyelets, place them about 1/4" from the boning channels. For firmer boning, you can use large heavy (3/8" - 1/2" wide by 24" long) cable ties from Home Depot and cut them down to size. If you are big-busted (C-cup or larger), you may prefer your corset to have even more support, either "corded" or fully-boned. Check out Drea Leed's corset-generator page (http://www.elizabethancostume.net/custompat/). Drea's pattern gives an historically accurate shape for the Elizabethan era. The instructions for creating the corset from the pattern include instructions for variations on the design as well as diagrams for fully boning a back-laced corset.

this is awesome, I love corsets but the ones I like cost way to much and I've got alot of really cool t-shirts that don't fit that i've been wanting something to do with.

I have a question about this...

I -REALLY- want to make this corset pattern for myself, but ahh..

What should be done for bust sizes that go beyond a D cup?

i have a question... is the subtract 2 for the front connection with the ribbon, so that both panels dont touch? If anyone knows pleese answer

  • evilsarah (anon) wrote on March 19, 1:40 am

I am so confused about the first green X How do you know where to put it as far as the horizontal goes??? Also, whats up with the bottom curve not hitting that middle (the 1/2X)

Other than that, this patter is pretty sweet and I cant wait to try it
