Mocc-Up

Every Spring, like clockwork, I get moccasins on the brain. There's really no better shoe for pairing with both sweet Spring and Summer dresses AND cut off denim shorts; they're equally great for walking around the city or having adventures in the woods. Much like Springtime florals or Fall plaids, moccasins never really go out of style - and based on this season's emphasis on beaded and fringed accessories, they're particularly relevant NOW.

You can easily score a pair of the oh-so-classic brand Minnetonkas (in a variety of styles) from any number of online shops, or go indie and spend your dollars to support up-and coming designer Kristen Lombardi's handmade Manimal line of moccasins-and-more. There are also, of course, at least a dozen ways to go DIY! A quick Google search turned up some really do-able ideas, including a "Moccasins 101" tutorial at PaleoPlanet and a multitude of basic patterns, like this easy-to-follow version at thefarm.org. If you're keen on taking your project to the next level, there are also some great kits and extensive patterns to be had at independent online retailers like CrazyCrow.com, AppalachianLeather.com, and SpiritConnectionStore.com. And remember - going DIY means your materials are up to you, so animal-friendly leather alternatives are ALWAYS an option.
Whether you're planning on making your own pair of moccasins or not, I want to know if your DIY tendencies extend down to your toes - share your shoe-DIY and customization projects in the comments section!
