Weekly DIY Roundup: Necktie Projects!

POSTED BY Lee Meredith, 13 June 2008

In the spirit of Father's Day, this week I bring you a Dad-present-inspired roundup - things you can make from old neckties! Whether you have one or several dozen, there's a project for you!

I'll start small... you can find some gorgeous fabrics in tie form, so you can just treat it as a small amount of fabric for whatever project could use a unique accent. Blogger blissed out uses scraps of tie silk to applique a sweater, beautiful!

I've done the same thing to decorate a photo album cover:

Rickrackruby on craftster shows you how to make these cute tie daisies from the tips.

Getting into bigger projects, check out this superawesome hat, also by rickrackruby! (With tutorial!)

Craftbits has a how-to for a necktie school bag. (or you could modify it smaller for a purse or bigger for a shopping/laptop bag...)

Got more ties? How about a skirt! Two2blue made an instructable tutorial for this long version:

And ollyollyoxenfree on craftster gives steps for a shorter one:

Another cool idea, with instructions on diy network's site, is a necktie chair seat. No good photo (stills from the show video look terrible), but I'll show you this amazing art chair by Tracy Deramus because I love it!

If you have an insane amount of ties and need a serious project, try a necktie quilt! Be creative, make up your own design, go crazy! This one is by Dacia Ray's grandmother, gorgeous!

No more tutorials, but there are more projects and ideas! Like this amazing tie dress by ~trinity-lea on deviantart:

Sister Diane did this necktie project set a few months ago for Church of Craft here in Portland - the fat end becomes a case (for glasses, crochet hooks, scissors, business cards, anything you want), the skinny end becomes a bracelet, and the middle becomes a flower pin:

I like to wear ties as belts, just by tying a knot off to the side, but you could definitely make a rad belt by putting a buckle on a skinny tie. Great project for guys too!

Another unisex idea is a necktie guitar strap, or camera strap. This strap was made by kaceydilla on etsy:

And for the kids, make a stuffed snake toy! This one is by swishina on mommysavers:

You could totally make rad headbands from ties - cut them a few inches shorter than all the way around your head and sew some elastic attaching the ends. Just an idea. I wear ties as headbands by wrapping them around my head twice and tying in the back.

One more idea I've done a few different ways - tie scarves! I made one by sewing a strip of crocheted yarn between 2 ties, facing opposite directions, and another by sewing them to each other, side by side, and lining the back with soft felted sweater wool for warmth and comfort.

Hi. I have this HUGE collection of ties that I've been trying to figure out stuff to do with. Really love the idea of the headband. Do you have a tutorial I could follow?

Hello. I am trying to figure out how to make guitar straps from old neckties (as a gift for my brother and father to remember my grandfather). Does anyone have a clue how to DIY?
