Under Where?

POSTED BY Morgan Hungerford, 13 August 2008

I love love love love love (should I say it again?) LOVE wearing vintage slips as dresses during the dog days of Summer; they're light and airy and as long as they're not scandalously see-through I'm content to rock them sans layering (with full coverage undergarments, of course). This is a trend that's so easy to take into Fall, and here's some photo-inspiration to get the lingerie-inspired creativity flowing through your closet:

Lace was big on runways from Prada to Paul & Joe, and the latter showed a particularly amazing pairing of a lacy top with mannish wool trousers. It's the masculine vs. the feminine that makes the outfit so intriguing, and I can think of a million ways to interpret this within my own wardrobe when Fall arrives. And, AHEM, all of those future outfits WILL include the proper undergarments...

Style.com's recent slideshow of looks from Lollapalooza included the photo above; singer Io Echo perfectly channels Hole-era Courtney Love in a distressed vintage slip that, paired with leather boots and glam rock sunglasses, is decidedly modern. When the weather changes just add tights and a smart jacket - you'll be sitting pretty in an outfit that's totally The-Little-Match-Girl-meets-Ziggy-Stardust, and very few people can argue with that.

The photo above (from Flickr user aphrodite-in-nyc) is a gorgeous shot of one of my favorite style inspirations of the last couple of years; The Citizens Band is a cabaret troupe that's as renowned for their gorgeous style as they are for their shows. Any and all special occassions this Fall will have me piling on luxe lingerie-inspired layers and accessories reminiscent of the Victorian burlesque - ribbons, costume jewels, thigh-highs over tights, THE WORKS. Ooh-la-la!

Are you feeling the underwear-as-outerwear trend? How do you plan on interpreting it this Fall?

I too am loving this trend. I've already gotten underway buying vintage slips and making them my own. I've already taken one slip from my stash and stenciled an anatomical heart onto the front of it. I think it's edgy and unexpected but feminine at the same time.

Where does one find these fabulous vintage slips?

I've found loads of them at flea markets, like fabulous crinoline slips usually used for square-dancing and things.
