Weekly DIY Roundup: Halloween Costumes!
So all these pumpkin crafts and spooky decorations are fun, but my favorite part of halloween has always been the costumes! There are a bunch of great collections of crafty costume ideas around the web, so this will be kind of a roundup of roundups, and I'll just show you my favorites!
I'll start with Instructables - so many great costume how-to's over there! Like this Rubik's Cube:

And Oscar the Grouch!

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories just posted an archive of all their Halloween projects, with more than just costumes, and they're going to keep adding to the list as they post new projects! Having been an art major, my personal favorite is the Traveling Exhibition of Modern Art:

The umbrella bat is cool too - such a creative reuse of a broken umbrella!

Craftster.org is packed full of excellent costume ideas, I think my favorite out of the list on their recent costume blog post is the human piñata:

The Craftzine blog is great at pointing to awesome projects - check out their Halloween archives to see everything they've linked to. Last year the magazine did a morning show special on Last Minute Halloween Costumes for Kids, and you can read tutorials for all five of the costumes (pirate, bee, monkey, lego, and sushi) on the blog. Blog reader Erin made the Lego costume adult-sized, using painter's tape instead of spray paint:

I've also found a couple free knitting patterns that would be fun to incorporate into a costume... There's the Hallowig designed by Megan Reardon on knitty.com:

Katrinkles on flickr modified the pattern to be the Morton salt girl, so cute!!

If you're a big sci-fi fan, knit yourself a pair of Spock ears with some leftover sock yarn, designed and posted free by Josie of Yarn Songs.

I kept this roundup to mostly adult costumes, but I have to show you my favorite kid's costume. (I guess it could be made adult sized...) FamilyFun.com posted this free how-to for the Tricky Gnome on Toadstool:

And my favorite pet costume - Headless Horseman posted on marthastewart.com:

I'll end this roundup with a couple of my costumes from past years.... Last year I was Mary Tyler Moore, for which I knit a beret to match hers in the opening sequence:

And the year before I was flying Mario from the 3rd game, with a crocheted tail and ear-adorned hat:

Yay costumes! Now I just need to figure out what the heck I'm gonna be this year! Hope if you're in the same undecided boat as me, this roundup helps you out! And share your crafted costumes with us!
