The tip on gathering will work without changing the tension.  If you want the fabric to gather up more, all you have to do is knot the threads on one end of the fabric, then pull one thread from the other end, and adjust them until they look even enough for you.

You DO NOT crank up the tension like that on your machine! It tweaks the tension all out of whack, and you have to get your machine SERVICED (can cost more than 0), to get it to work normally in the middle tensions again! If you MUST turn up tension like that, you do so on a piece of scrap fabric first, turning up the tension a half-number at a time, doing it slowly so that you don't mess up your machine's ability to recognize normal tension. I heard the same tip, I did it for a while, and it ruined my machine. Don't let this happen to you!
