  • Celebrity DIY Style: Nicole Richie At Fashion Week

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, SEPTEMBER 08 2008 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

Nicole Richie made an appearance at the DKNY show during Merceds-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. I have to say, I adore her outfit - it's simple, yet looks dressy enough to attend most functions. I searched around for suitable patterns to use to re-create this look with minimal alterations and came up with Jalie 965 for the tank and Burda 7720 for the skirt. If the celebrity fashions are going to be this good, I can't wait to see the rest of the week!

  • DIY Celebrity Style: Vests

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, AUGUST 11 2008 03:30 PM | PERMALINK

One of my sources of clothing inspiration is Lucky Magazine. Not only do they discuss the latest trends, but there's always a great celebrity fashion that graces the cover. This month's look: Milla Jovovich modeling fall's biggest fad, the vest. These garments easy to sew, plus they whip up quickly and are easy to find in almost any pattern book. To try your hand at making your own vest by using a pattern such as Vogue 7644, McCall 5193, Burda 7810, or Marfy 1269, pair it up with a plaid...

  • Celebrity DIY Style: T-Shirt Dress

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, AUGUST 04 2008 10:21 AM | PERMALINK

Who said you have to wear formal wear when walking down the red carpet (or in the case of the teen-choice awards last night, blue carpet)? Actress Minka Kelly arrived at this year's festivities in a simple white, knit T-shirt dress. This simple design can be easily recreated at home and dressed up or down for (almost) any ocasion. If you opt for commercial patterns try Burda 7972, Kwik Sew 3023, or Textile Studio's Madison Avenue dress. You can also use your favorite shirt pattern and alter it...

  • Celebrity DIY Style: Fashionable Politics

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, JULY 14 2008 04:09 PM | PERMALINK

While Barack Obama and John McCain duke it out in the political ring, there's a new debate being launched - this one in the fashion community.  The question?  Which potential first lady has the best wardrobe.  Acorrding to Tim Gunn, host of Bravo's Project Runway and Guide to Style, Michelle is the winner - and most of American might agree with him.  Shortly after Michelle Obama appeared on The View, the Donna Ricco dress she wore flew off store shelves.  Now you don't have to wait for this hot...

  • Celebrity DIY Style: Leggings

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, MAY 27 2008 12:02 PM | PERMALINK

One of the hottest celebrity garments has to be leggings - you see them on everyone from Paris Hilton to Beyonce. In fact, they've become so popular that Lindsey Lohan announced her own legging line back in March. Now you can skip the basic black style that you see on the racks and sport a trendy pair such as Paris Hilton's stripe or silver lame leggings just by sewing your own.

There are plenty of patterns available to re-create this look for yourself: Burda 7791, Vogue 8401, McCall...

  • Deep Thoughts

POSTED BY CORINNE LEIGH, MARCH 07 2008 04:54 PM | PERMALINK

I have never used a "real" pattern. Yes, I've created my own and made nice things from them but never in my life attempted a professional pattern. Shocking, I know. Honestly, they scared the crap out of me. There have been several times that I felt all ambitious and decided to go for it. Then I would pull the pattern out of the envelope open it up and that's about as far as I would get. The most use I've ever gotten out of a "real" pattern is making other patterns out of them and wrapping gifts with...
