Check out our website or subscribe to our videos on iTunes so you can watch all of our episodes and how-to's.

How to tailor your own shirt
June 8, 2007Recently, we received a video submission from John Paul. He wanted to know how to make a baggy shirt fit, because we all know how expensive it is to get a shirt made specifically tailored for you.
We're going to show you a little method that we think is the best called the "Pinch and Pin"1. First you will need to take your baggy shirt, turn it inside out and put it on.

2. Make sure you have a friend help you with this step. Get our a bunch of pins and then pinch the excess fabric and pin it so it...

Viewer Submission: Tracey Vibert (How to hem a pair of pants)
June 13, 2007Hey Thread Heads,
You might remember Tracey from ThreadHeads Episode 7: New York fashion. What we didn't tell you is that she sent in another video on how to hem a pair of pants. This is a great bit of knowledge, especially for myself, since I have to hem almost all of my dress pants (and some of you may be able to relate). Hey, it looks much easier than it is because you gotta get the measurements exactly right or else you'll end up with one pant longer than the other.
So many thanks to Tracey from...

June 26, 2007Megan Nicolay's How-to make a hot bikini out of old tee shirts
First, you need 1 extra large T-shirt..but if you like the mismatched look decide on two different colored shirts.
*important note* for this lesson's purposes we are going to refer to the yellow shirt as the top shirt (yellow shirt = top shirt) and the white shirt as the bottom shirt (white shirt = bottom shirt).

What a Trip: Tokyo Street Fashion
October 25, 2007
Tokyo street fashion is an unparalleled carnival of color and insanity. Costume and style are synonymous and it is so dazzling, hypnotic, and intoxicating, it should be a sin. It could be a drug considering how trippy it is. But the insanity that is present in Tokyo street fashion is the good kind of insanity that reveals itself in creativity and extreme indulgence. Tokyo fashion is of two extremes. On one side it is modern, clean, structural, and even architectural, the other side, however, is an...

Sh*t by Hilary Duff
November 16, 2007
Earlier this year, August 26th to be exact, Hilary Duff released her first line of DIY accessories to be exclusively sold in Michael's craft stores. Really. Well, thank you Hilary Duff. I've always felt that DIY lacked a face and leader in the celebrity community. Of course this line is aimed towards preteens and kids so it's marketed to anyone from the ages of like five to probably around sixteen. But twelve year olds can do more than iron and clip charms to bracelets. Her slogan is, DIY {Design...

Runway to DIY: Headwear!
December 14, 2007
Remember this spring when everyone went CRAZY for the Prada turban? It was EVERYWHERE and in EVERY MAGAZINE until one day it just wasn't - the sheer novelty of it gave it a very short shelf life! But for those of us who appreciate a little quirky eccentricity (a la Little Edie Beale [of Grey Gardens fame], pictured above), it was a great inspiration to start exploring different headwear options! Over the last year or so I've been drawn to all sorts of makeshift dome-decorations, and in the...

Beret Brained!
November 29, 2007I'll admit it: I've got berets on the brain lately!
The style has become quite trendy in recent days, but it's really quite a fashion classic, for men, and women: its one of those pieces that will almost always continue to look chic, no matter the current rage.
Of course, i think that making your own beret (or own ANYTHING) is a heck of a lot more creatively and personally satisfying than merely plunking down your cash for one at an urban outfitters (or it's sartorial hipster equivalent). Making stuff... -
Thinking Outside the Donation Box: The Linens Department
December 7, 2007This post here is the first of a small installment called "Thinking Outside the Donation Box", where I'll give you a small smattering of unusual but creative reuse ideas for that which you find at your local thrift!

Make a point to peruse the linens and housewares section of your own local secondhand shop! It's literally a gold mine when it comes to materials you can utilize in the making of your own completely original clothing.
Straight off the top o' my head are some craft ideas for you to use... -
Bloody Beau'iful
December 10, 2007Hey London Fashionistas? One Word. Killer.
London fashionistas are one of the most well-dressed of all the fashionistas I've ever seen. They replace New York women's hard edge with generous amounts of sophistication and true confidence in every article of clothing they wear. Unlike Parisian fashionistas, who tend to be pompous and have tendencies towards the avant-garde (you know what I mean), LONDON fashionista pieces are so PRESENT that you just stand there and think "oh my God, of COURSE!" Then you...

Hat Trick
February 13, 2008No matter how low the temperature outside, I just can't stop looking ahead to Spring (I work in retail - you really can't blame me), and I've been thinking a lot lately about the upcoming season's hats. While I'm definitely excited that fedoras aren't going anywhere (though you couldn't have ripped last summer's straw version away from me if you'd tried), I've lately found myself building future outfits around a floppy, wide-brimmed, 70s-inspired topper. Before you think I've gone all J.Lo on you, here's...

Ruffle Vest Tutorial
February 15, 2008
Alright, last week was fashion week in NYC and If you've been keeping up with pictures from the runway shows you'll know that not only are we in for a very dark Fall 2008 (black is the new black, if you were wondering), but ribbons, ruffles, and bows are on the radar, big time. Luckily they're of a quiet and ladylike sort, and they function more as a point of interest rather than a HUGE GIRLY OBSTRUCTION randomly placed on any old garment (well, except over at Benjamin Cho, where things may have...

FutureFashion: The Eco-friendly Fashion show!
February 4, 2008

It seems these days that every is going GREEN. And with fashion being such a big part society and especially during fashion week, why not combine the two?
Just a few days ago, Earth Pledge showcased their annual FutureFashion show in New York City. Earth Pledge is a non-profit organization which promotes the development of sustanable materials. With a variety of 28 well known designers coming together last week, FutureFashion was a huge success. Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Diane Von...

The Cheap Date Guide to Style
April 18, 2008
Cheap Date is a now-defunct British fashion mag that championed both a total commitment to anti-fashion and a "wear what you want" aesthetic. The print magazine had a too-short run in the early 2000s, but (lucky for us!) its thrift-espousing spirit has been reinstated in the form of the US release of The Cheap Date Guide to Style.
The book is an eclectic mix of photo collages, mini-interviews, and the most offbeat of style breakdowns; a section on fashion "classics" includes such excellent...

DIY Headboards for Your Bed
April 30, 2008Here are some other options for headboards for your bed that you can make yourself. The DIY Network offers this tutorial of a padded do-it-yourself headboard. Go on over to their site to see all kinds of home projects with detailed lessons.
As always, I turn to Apartment Therapy for ideas and inspiration. They provided the curtain idea in this week's episode and give this lesson on how to make your own.
I then turned to my nesting queen, Martha, who suggests using a door as...

Upholstery Fabric
May 6, 2008
A few solid sources for organic upholstery fabric are Rubie Green, where I picked up the Lakeview print to re-vamp my ottoman.

I also adore the fabric at Twenty2. Both shops have easy-to-order websites and are earth-friendly companies that use natural fibers and chemical-free dyes.

Etsy and thrift stores are great resources for vintage fabric. This way you can give an old piece a new look using an earth-friendly method.
