  • Tracing A Pattern

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, APRIL 25 2008 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

Last week I blogged a bit about tracking down international pattern magazines. So my question today is, "have you been bitten by the pattern magazine bug yet?" If so, you probably have your first issue in your hands, are looking at the pattern inserts (which looks roughly like a roadmap), and are now wondering "what do I do now?" Here's some tips to get you started sewing up your first pattern:

Like any pattern, you first need to determine what size you'll need. Carefully measure yourself and...

  • Patterns With International Flare

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, APRIL 19 2008 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

For many of us who sew, we've become familiar with the paper patterns that we find in brick and mortar stores - commonly known as "the Big 4" (Simplicity, McCall, Butterick, and Vogue). It wasn't until after years of sewing with these envelopes that I discovered there were other patterns out there - those that come in magazines! Not only were there lots of trendy options to sew up, but there were up to 50 patterns available in one issue alone! Now for the bad news - none of them are written in the...

  • Tie-Dying made simple

POSTED BY LINDSEY CHEN, APRIL 16 2008 11:35 AM | PERMALINK

Tie - Dying isn't just for the 80's. As we've seen on a past Threadbanger episode, with a little bit of paint and a cool scrunching pattern, anyone can create a really cool tie dyed t-shirt. However, some of us are turned off by the idea of wearing tons of bright colors all at once. I am more into wearing one color - usually dark, but I still love the result of tie-dye patterns. I saw this post on Style Bytes and how just a simple tie-dye can do so much for a shirt. I love the fact that its...

  • Art Attack!

POSTED BY MORGAN HUNGERFORD, APRIL 10 2008 05:51 PM | PERMALINK

We all know that Spring fashion means FLORALS, and this season is certainly no exception. But another type of pattern is making its mark all over spring dresses and skirts as well - the art-inspired print! The colorful abstractions were on runways from Anna Sui to Zero Maria Cornejo (and everywhere in between), and, per usual, my mind wandered over to the realm of DIY possibilities...

Teen Vogue keeps it simple with a great paint-and-brushstroke-DIY from designer Jason Wu; the final product...

  • Designing Your Own Fabric

POSTED BY STACY SCHLYER, MARCH 31 2008 10:18 AM | PERMALINK

One of my favorite aspects of sewing is the planning stage. I love looking at a pattern and envisioning how it would look in a varitey of fabrics. Most of the time I can find material that will work for the project I have in mind. However, there are times I would love to make something in a fabric that doesn't seem to exist... that's when I wish I could design my own material. Thankfully, that dream may not be too far away - a new website, Spoonflower, will offically launch in May and has been...

  • Deep Thoughts

POSTED BY CORINNE LEIGH, MARCH 07 2008 04:54 PM | PERMALINK

I have never used a "real" pattern. Yes, I've created my own and made nice things from them but never in my life attempted a professional pattern. Shocking, I know. Honestly, they scared the crap out of me. There have been several times that I felt all ambitious and decided to go for it. Then I would pull the pattern out of the envelope open it up and that's about as far as I would get. The most use I've ever gotten out of a "real" pattern is making other patterns out of them and wrapping gifts with...

  • Patterns from the Past

POSTED BY KENDRA CUNNINGHAM, DECEMBER 13 2007 03:11 PM | PERMALINK

Love vintage clothes? Second hand stores not satisfying your craving for all things vintage? Why not make your own! We talked to the owner of this awesome site for recycled vintage patterns, Michelle Lee.

"Patterns from the Past is a internet based company that sells vintage sewing patterns from the turn of the century to present day. All of the patterns were previously owned by someone else - so this is a very large re-cycling project for me that started over 11 years ago when the...
