How-to Crochet a Hat, Threadbanger

I love this idea for a crochet hat, but could you do something for knitting????

So here it is again... I missed Christmas and Making Belated holiday presents...  so I found the pattern again...(found on the blog)

Materials:

10.5 Crochet Needle
Yarn

1. Begin with a slip stitch and 8 chain stitches.

2. Connect the two ends by putting your needle through the first stitch and do 2 single crochet stitch in each stitch so you end up with 16 stitches around the outer ring.

3. For the second row:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

4. The third row is a single crochet stitch all the way around.

5. The 4th row is 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch all the way around. Try to keep your hat flat, you don't want it to roll quite yet.

6. The next row is:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
5th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.
 
7. When you reach the beginning again, its a single crochet stitch all the way around.

8. The next set is:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
5th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
6th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

8. Once again, when you reach the beginning again, its a single crochet stitch all the way around.

9. The next set is:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
5th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
6th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
7th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

10. Instead of doing a row of single crochet all the way around, do the counting rows again only modify stitch 8:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
5th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
6th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
7th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
8th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

11. Counting row again, but modify the 9th stitch:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
4th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
5th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
6th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
7th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
8th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
9th stitch: do 2 single crochet stitches,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

12. This row, the same counting technique but modify to do 2 single crochet in stitch 10.

13. Modify the same counting row to do the 2 single crochet in stitch 11.

14. Again for stitch 12.

15. Against for stitch 13.

16. Single crochet in everything stitch around and around and around until you've reached your desired depth. You will start to notice the hat curl, this is expected.

** If you run out of yarn, simply tie the end of the used yarn to the end of the new yarn **

17. Once you've reached your desired depth, you need to close up the rim. We're back to counting:
1st stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
2nd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
3rd stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch, 
SKIP 4th stitch,
5th stitch: do 1 single crochet stitch,
do this repetition until you reach the beginning of the row marked by the tail.

18. For the final row, repeat the counting in step 17 but skip 2 stitches. Pull the loop out really big, snip the end and tie a knot and you are DONE!

FIN!

How do we improvise this pattern w/ a size 5.5 crochet needle?

I love this hat. I am just finishing my first one. I went to Walmart and got Lion Brand homespun yarn, and it worked out great. Although, the yarn was pretty expensive. It was about  plus tax. Is there any cheaper yarn? 
This was the easiest project i've done. I've been crocheting for about 6- months, and this was so easy. Thanks so much for posting this. I've been wanting to make one of these.

I just wanted to say that I have made 3(!) of these!  One for my mom and two for me!  I love it, it's super easy and super cute.  This is my first crochet project and it turned out cute.  I used worsted weight yarn and the same size hook and it created a nice texture.

i am just beginning to learn how to crochet, and this seems pretty simple. My problem, however, is learning hot to go back into stitches. sometimes it's hard to find the stitch your supposed to be in.....any hep? thnx to anyone who can help explain this!

omggggg. i love you lots right now. i make a bundles of different things with crocheting, but my hats always turn out kinda funky for some reason. but i can do it now thanks to you.  yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy. heheheh

I am stuck  the row which you count the four single stiches then two singles in stitch five do you continue  two singles in each of the remaining stiches in that row  same for the other remaining rows that require two singles in stitch 6 etc???

I am still trying to figure out what the dimension is before you start decreasing for the last two rows?  I want my hat to fit the way Corrinen's does.

I have done this 3 times now and my hat is no bigger than would fit a baby. I have even tried using a larger hook size and thick yarn.

what is the diameter or the finished hat?
I have undone mine twice already, first time too small and just looked like a mushroom, second time too large and more like a tam for dreadlocks. Help!

2 sc each stitch = 16 st outer ring
Row 2
sc, sc, sc, 2 sc until beginning of row marked by tail

2 sc in each stitch to flatten it out

Since the yarn I wanted to use was too thin, I used two balls of yarn together (one dark green and one brighter green, which gave a mixed colour effect). If the yarn is thinner than the one Corine used, you'll need more stiches and more work; if it's thicker, less stiches and quicker work!
This was my first hat and I must have lost count of the number of stiches a thousand times but in the end it's not that noticeable, as long as you don't make the stiches too tight.
It's a great look and quite easy to make! Good luck!

okay so i'm just now getting to the part where you single crochet until you reach your desired depth... and my circle thing is already a foot in diameter. is it supposed to be that big?

Thanks for the crochet hat instructions.  Hope your holidays were happy.  I am trying to get crochet under control.  I am a 60 year old grandmother and you know learning new things keeps your mind from going bye-bye.  (;  I am teaching my six and four year old granddaughters to knit.  Then we will go to crochet, but I have to learn it first.  We do lots of other crafts, but I am determined to get crochet as a real skill.  So again, thanks and keep up the cheerful sharing. So when i tried mine came out very small.  Maybe it was the yarn i was using but i am not sure.  Next time ti make it bigger i will be putting one row of single stitches after each round, then i hope it will be bigger.

How do you know when the row ends?  well, the little peice of string left over at the beginning, use that as a guide.  each time you go around and finish the row you should kind of be lined up with that piece of string.  and since you always go in the same direction it should be easy to tell when you are close.  and sometimes you can tell when you reach the end because the next stitch is slightly raised, or at least at a little different level. i think you can guess work it a little, i dont think it is that big of a deal.

I can't tell when the row ends and my hat came out all lopsided on one side!  Does it need to be exact or it is about when the row ends?

Okay I am new to this crochet and I find it very fun to do...I love this video on making a hat. But i am having trouble, i follow all the instuctions and i am towards the end after the 13 row and my hat does not curl up at all. I was wondering if i made a mistiske any where? Please help me...

Heh... my only question is this... how did you work on that hat with the cat sitting in your lap? My cat got curious halfway through the hat, jumped up on the couch next to me, promptly grabbed my yarn and ran off with it. Pulled the hat and the crochet hook right out of my hand! (Then the little purse snatcher ran off with my wallet... sounds like a case of "No crafts, Mom. Just pet.")

You will need more than 103 yards to complete hat.
10.5 size hook

Start:
A. 8 chain stitches
B. Connect the two ends with single crochet stitch

2. Stitch 1-3 add 1 SC, 4th stitch add 2 SC. Continue, 2 SC in every 4th stitch.

the last row is it:

OR

I made one by doing the pause and write thing- I redid it like seven times before I realized that I skipped a step in there. After that the pattern worked like a dream. I need to post pics- I even made a little feather brooch for it! Thanks a Million corinne!

I'm attempting to do this.  I've written the instructions by just viewing the video and pausing it, then writing down what was said.  My first attempt didn't quite look like Corrine's but I do believe my yarn is thinner than the one Corrine used.
It was a hat , but it was quite large and I'm going to attempt it using a smaller crochet needle.  I am determined to make this work.

hey am i stupid or are other people having problems? normally im awesome at this kind of stuff but now it all goes *POOF*. i'm having issues with the '1 slip stitch and 8 chain stitches' does that mean that there are 9 stitches in all for that first part or wat? any ways love the hat but written instructions would be kinda helpful too! thanks SO much corrine!!!!

Man, I wish I could do this... I've tried and restarted atleast 10 times. I don't really know how to crochet, but I can get by. I have a hard time understanding exactly WHAT counts as a stitch.  There is always a

And I don't know whether to hook through the diagonal yarn crossing to the hook or the flat piece (that looks more like stitch).

Corinne's method may be a bit unconventional, but that's what DIY is all about! There is no crochet president, no rules commissioned by an official board of the crochet elite.
Kudos to you, Corrine for learning this fine art in such a short amount of time! I've been crocheting since I was 8 and I lot experimenting with it. I'd love to see more crochet projects as you learn them.

Got tons of comments, and one of my friends now wants to learn how to make a hat and I'm going to teach her on a bus trip in a week.

#1 don't join with a knot, just hold the new yarn against the work and crochet it in. When the old yarn gets too short pull up the 2 loops on your hook and finish the stitch with the new yarn. Crochet the end of the old yarn in by holding it against the stitches and working over it.
#2 don't end your work with a knot, it WILL pull out, sooner or later. Pull the cut end through, like Corinne did, then use a yarn needle, a #18 tapstery needle works well, and sew the end into the stitches. Bury the yarn, it will be invisible. Work 4-6 stitches in one direction and then back in the other for 2-3 stitches.
I'm famous, ?infamous?, for my crocheted berets, everybody I know has a least one. I use a different pattern, tighter top hole, less counting.

Another way to end the hat is to put the tail of the yarn through your final stitch & pull tight. It makes a smaller knot & holds tight. (:

So when you do the count thing is it every 4 stich/5/6/etc.. you do the double stitch?

I know what I'm making my friends over the course of the next three days since I waited until the last minute and happen to know how to crochet. ^_~ Awesome.
