Mad Hatter Costume, TopHat, Threadbanger

...this hat by far made my costume THE coolest EVER! haha :) I thank you kindly for your crafty ways!

I used the Hat design, and did a ton of research on the New Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts to be able to make my wife and mine's Halloween costumes this year. We won First Place in our Cities Halloween Festival. I will try to add some pictures to the forums.

This tutorial inspired me to be the Mad Hatter this year, and last night I wore the outfit to a Halloween party hosted by my local comic shop. There were some incredibly ambitious costumes at the party, but I charmed the judges and I won a prize! I'll wear it tonight to give out candy, and I love it so much that I'll wear it again in March to go see the "Alice" movie on opening night. Thanks, Threadbanger!

Amazing...I made a Mad Hatter costume based on the ideas in this tutorial. It took me way more than 4 hours but I have no experience making anything what so ever...but it came out more amazing than I ever imagined. I must say..if it doesn't look like it does in the video, keep going...painting and texturing makes almost anything...the more imperfect the more real the costume gets. I got nothing but compliments today on the costume...can't wait for the big halloween day tomorrow. Thanks!!!

Next year ,my friend, I will make it. (I already made a kimnono!!) I wore it to my school's dance and everyone even my evil math teacher liked it!

I did it! It's for my son. He's the Mad Hatter( I'm the Queen of Hearts), but I couldn't resist wearing it to two parties this last weekend. Watch the lumpiness of your hot glue. I had to go around and smooth with a razor blade to take care of the little blobs drilling their way into my head. I use a Dior sweater dress that was me mums back in the 60's , so the hat is all fuzzy wool. Nice and stretchy- that's the key. Also, I lined the brim with purple silk to cove the not pretty 'wrong' side of the sweater and sprayed the inside black b/c it will be set down at some time during the evening and I can't have people seeing the white poster board. I didn't have the heart to distress it. We'll add to his madness in some other way. Have fun in all your Halloed endeavors!

i just noticed they didnt ust tulips for the pants; just the coat. the world makes so much more sense now.

also i love the idea of making a mini hat in this style. im going to do that this friday. SO EXCITED.

so basically i love this tutorial. i was already planning on being a mad hatter when i found this. im not doing a johnny depp style mad hatter, but i took some ideas. first of all, i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE those pants. i got some lime green granny pants from the thrift store and striped them with dark blue. WARNING. i know they use tulips brand spray stuff but DONT. it splatters instead of spraying, soaks through under the masking tape, and is waaaaaaay overpriced. use the squeeze on kind and just put it in paint pallete. diluting it with water works if you start to run out. for the hat, use a fabric bias. also, if you want to avoid the wrinkles, having your fabric trapezoid-shaped will help. one or two major darts are ok, and you can cover them up w/ feathers/hat pins/etc. also, after its all painted and decorated, the wrinkles look fine, so dont worry. the posterboard for the cylindrical part may not be stiff enough and buckle over when you stretch and glue. i glued in popscicle stick boning. hat pins can be made out of chopsticks and big, pretty buttons. i hope this was helpful!!

Augh! Of COURSE I find this like two days after I finish covering a stiff, ill-fitting papier-mache tophat with cloth for my lion tamer costume. This looks so much better! I'm going to have to make one. Too bad I still have the rest of my costume to make first! Maybe next year.

At first I had some issues with the first layer of fabric. I was stupid and just cut the cotton and then glued it, thinking it was going to stretch and bend inwards like it did in the video. My mom gave me a piece of information that could be helpful to many other people : Cut the fabric on the bias. That way, there is more stretch in the fabric! Hope this helps!! :D

I fudged and used black tulip fabric spray on jeans, how long should I wait to peel off the tape?

I LOVE this! It's great because the costume looks like the kind of thing you'd never be able to make yourself. Awesome.

Question for those that have completed the hat.. what kind of spray paint did you all use for the hat? Did you have to use fabric paint or would any spray paint stick to the hat?

Oh my goodness! My fiance was not certain of what he wanted his costume to be until I showed him this! not the whole costume, but the hat. It looks totally awesome!!! lol not as perfect as yours, of course Miss Corinn, but he loves it. Oh and I couldn't help but make a tiny version to pin to the side of my do for my costume...so fab.

I just finished making this costume for my hubby. It definitely took me longer than four hours - probably more like five and a half to six. I had the same issue with the hat material bunching up, but after seeing it spray painted I actually think it looks better. They must have used some really stretchy material in the video. The wire I used for the brim was just an old wire clothes hanger. I had to tape two together to make it long enough, but it worked fine and was free! Also, I'm now absolutely in love with Tulip fabric spray. A-MaZiNg! I added up all my costs for the whole costume and it only came to about $30 - the typical price for a store-bought costume - but it looks WAY better. Thanks so much guys!

oh.. i meant "stretch 'n glue", not "stretch 'n pull"

Making the hat certainly is not as easy as it looks. Especially the "stretch 'n pull" part. I think I ruined mine, it looks more like a top veil / inverse lampshade than a hat. I wonder what kind of fabric they used for the top and body of the hat - it looks stretchy in the video. And of course mine also crunches up with lots of creases and folds when it tapers down to the bottom. Hopefully when I spray paint it with dark colors, the folds won't show as much. Theirs looks amazingly smooth and even has the curved shape all the way down. Anyone had any luck replicating the hat? As for the wire, Megan&Chet, I would just go to Michael's (or any other arts & crafts store) and get a thick "necklace"/beading wire. It worked out quite fine for me.

wanted to see this so bad to mod it for a Satine costume in the future but it won't load for me, so sad now.

My boyfriend and I are going to the parties this year as the Queen of Hearts and of course, thanks to you guy, the Mad Hatter. He's not into dressing up so I have no idea how you guys pulled this one off for me. ;) One question tho, where did you find the wire you used for the hat? Or, what kind of wire is it? Hey, everyone who wants a Where the Wild Things Are costume! Why don't you just combine the Big Foot Costume episode and the Bunny Ears episode, using white fur, and add a tail and a crown?

Loved this episode! So I decided I want to be that kid from where the wild things are and make a costume like he wears. It's a like a body suit with a hood that has big ears and a tail on his bottom. I think it would be cute and warm!
