Make a Beret, Wet Felting, Threadbanger Projects

I know this video is 2 years old, but there is one question I have. Is there anything I can use besides bamboo? If anyone knows the answer, that would be cool. I really want to do this project, but i'm lacking bamboo...

Some berets have a little tab on the very top. How do you achieve that?

This is awesome! I want to try it too. I will share with the local Navajo weavers as they want to learn other things they can do with their wool.

I needed a red hat to join the "Red Hats", so I used your video to make a Beret!  It turned out wonderful and I received many nice complements. Thank you so much the  video. It is very informative and made me feel like I could indeed do this.  I did have a little trouble getting it to shrink enough and in the end, and I ended up throwing it into the HOT wash with my jeans and it worked - just agitation enough to shrink it to fit perfect!

BTW. I could have problems finding the bamboo mats where I live. But I have panel curtains from Ikea, those pretty much look the same way, and they're long and quite wide, made from a synthetic material. I bet those can be used too. May be a good idea for those who plan on doing a lot, as you could cut out different sizes and get a lot of these things out of only one panel curtain length. Just an idea...

Is it just the trim that got ruined on your grandma's beret? I would get some leather trim, if I were you, and sew new edging onto it. Should be easy enough. Find a nice piece of brown, soft leather, and simply fold it over and stitch it down, then thread a cord through it if needed to adjust the fit. Would be a breeze for you to do, that's for sure! :)

I tried wet felting at a workshop years ago, we made a pair of felted slippers (more like a pair of felted uggs without a sole, if you understand what I mean, boot type thick and heavy super warm slippers for inside the house). I decided after that workshop to NEVER attempt it again as I got awful inflammation from the fingers all the way to my shoulders from rubbing and rubbing. But, we did not use the method you're using here, and it seems to me that you might be using much less force than we were instructed to do. Also we did not use that resist. Can't remember that net either. So maybe the method you're using, is more effective. So I might just give it a try some day. I love this type hats, but hasn't been able to find one with the right fit for years. Had one I loved, but it got ruined somehow.  The fit I want/need, is just like yours. The ones I have found in stores, are way too wide for my like. Also I like to pull it down real far, to cover my ears, a.k.a. more wearing it like a beanie than a soldier's beret, if you get my drift... A not-so-wide one fits better for that kind of use. So maybe my best bet actually is to make one myself...

did your beret break in winter? if so, the cold probably cracked the lining (or what ever that is).

I have a lot of my moms old hats and well most of them have a stiff edge like your g-ma's beret, that edge will degrade over the years with use, so it can be replaced, but a good way to keep that from happening so quickly is to NOT hang it anywhere, only lay it down. extra stress on the edging will cause it to crack and degrade like yours did, that could be why there are distinct breaks in your berets banding.

You really have to watch out for moths with wool. If you bring new wool or yarn into your home (from estate sales, garage sales, etc) put it in the freezer over night to kill any thing lurking in it. Also, items you make out of animal hair need to be conditioned like you would your own hair. You can get lanolin from your local health food store or there are some soaks you can buy. Doing this will keep the item soft and keep the fibers from becoming dry and brittle. Also, when I pack items away, I do the freezer thing first and then put ceder chips in with it for added protection.

I've made 4 of these in 2 days.  I felt them halfway and then toss them in the dryer to save me some manual labor.  Thanks a ton.  More like this please!!!

wow! this is crazy

Hats are so crucial to the homeless!  Lives can be saved by keeping heads warm in winter.  Please explore ways to make hats that will really work for the homeless.  Our homeless shelter is so glad to get hats, gloves and scarves to hand out.

wow this is so awsome now if i could only find that fiber here, my mom wears these and omg i would love to make her one. I was wondering tho about yours corinne if maybe it got throwed in the dryer? in the video it looked like it had shrunk and also getting it wet and just getting it to warm after can cause it to look like that I think . but i am so going to try and find the supplies to make some of these. think they would sell very good around here......

I loved this video! I'm currently trying to make one and i thought it would be really helpful if you had a list of materials needed/ used because as a first timer the "ingredients" used are not part of my everyday jargon and i feel silly asking people where to find stuff i need and then not knowing how to spell or pronounce it properly.

For the person who was interested in "vegan" felting, you could check out environmentally concious and sheep friendly business that supply wool and roving. Because although you could knit or crochet a beret in other fibers, synthetics wont felt, and neither will bamboo, rayon, tencel, etc. Their fibers just don't have that "grabby" thing to make em stick together.

This is brilliant, i have been using felt for a number of years now and find it an amazing technique.  I've never used cardboard as the resist/ relief - i tend to favour a material called calico that is really flexible and easy to shape into many different ways.  Just remember to pre-wash the calico or it'll shrink!

Awesome tutorial, Corinne! My first attempt at a wet felted hat ended up being used as a hammock for my ferret - he loved it though, so it was all good.

I've been meaning to try wet felting again (I've done a few needle felting projects), but will likely need to wait until after the holidays, due to my current project queue & work obligations.

I've seen veryvery small (and overpriced) packages of dyed roving at Michael's and AC Moore, intended for needle felting. Etsy.com is my preferred place to shop for fiber, though, hands-down!

hey guys! i live in the city and i recently found out that there is a buffalo exchange store near my house. I LOVE the store and think others should know about it ( and their mission). I also know there's one in brooklyn. You guys should definitely do a special with them, or at least just check it out

it look like ot got wet so if you left it out in the open on the hat rack then the water in the air got to it it happend to me my grate gma made me a baby hat and years later found it in a plastic bag i took it out of the bag and hung it my room monthes later it look like your gmas hat sorry to see that happen to a cute and well loved hat

Here's a cool tip, if you don't want to ruin your hands or make your hand tender, wear plastic bags on your hands when you do wet felting.  That way you'll protect your hands so that they won't become tender.

so first time weighing in here. Whew! okay. so... the soap you use is that a specific kind or any old soap will do? But thanks for this DIY i love love love berets and now i can do my own. Wish me luck!

i love the beret! i have made a few before but new i really want to try this. my mom learned to needle felting and showed me but i definitely want to try wet felting!

Great video.  I have been wanting to try some felting.  

About your hat.  It's kind of hard to tell from the video, but it looks like the band has just rotted over time.  If it's possible I would recommend taking it off and replacing it with some grossgrain ribbon or something like that.  If it has shrunken over time and it's wool you can always wet it and stretch it back out.  May take a while to get it the right size again.  If you have a steamer it makes the process a lot easier.

Is the brim of the beret lines in leather? I cannot really tell if it is in the video. But if it is leather will crack if not kept oiled and if it's old it just happens over time. you could always cut that off and crochet, knit, or sew a new brim on as well.

Hm, can we use yarn? Well, wool yarn. Um, I also don't have any bamboo mats! Is it really on such a high level of diyer for life? It didn't seam like it but I haven't done it so I'm not sure...

I had that happen to my wool scarf , it looks like it got moist and then either didn't dry properly or dried at to high a heat. It also looked like there where some holes which might just be from bugs, wool is a natural material so some bugs find it tasty(?) at any rate they could have eaten away at the fibers. Moth balls and hat boxes might help this.

awesome job Corinne!!! actually...the other day i was washing clothes at this new laundromat that i had never been to, and was washing my most favorite favorite FAVORITE hat that i usually just hand wash..went to put everything in the dryer and the hat made it in there with it. and for some odd reason i think the dryer got too hot and it actually burned some of my clothes and my hat. i was soo bummed out. thank you so much for this tutorial!! 
ive bought roving on etsy before...so it shouldnt be hard to find.

did u wash you'r hat before you found it like that becuase if you did it might have strank in the dryer

what i think happened to grandmas hat was that it probably got wet then was heated so it lost its shape and shrank
