I love this! I work in a custom framing shop and, like a well-intentioned packrat, I collect/salvage all the old frames that customers do not want or are being thrown away. I sometimes spray paint the old frames fun colors and create jewelry boards from them by wrapping cork board or foam core with pretty fabric. Then I use decorative tacks (or plain pushpins) to hang earrings and necklaces from. Just like this tray tutorial, it is a fun project and a great gift idea that can be personalized to suit anyone's taste.
One suggestion: If your paper insert or cardboard backing for the tray is too large, you can trim it down to the frame size by placing it under the glass and carefully tracing around the edges of the glass with a pencil. Then cut and voila!
Another suggestion: if you are worried about the tabs not being secure enough, you can use a staple gun (or glazier points) to reinforce the backing and make it strong like Popeye! This is how we install frames at the shop and it works great.
Thanks for this great tutorial! Now I have another new idea on how to get all these frames out of my house!
AWW this is such a awsome TUT!1 thanx for sharing, would also make a awsome gift for just about any occassion!! awsome JOB!! have a awsome evening THREADBANGER'z
This was a cute tut, but like someone said earlier, I would be worried about the little tabs holding everything in place, but I suppose it would be fairly simple to add a piece of wood or something to the back of the frame to make it stronger...
I love this. And might I also suggest that you use some type of calk or sealant around the inside of the frame so that if a liquid spills it would keep it from seeping through and ruining your beautiful paper. Excellent project, thanks. I'm going to make some!
totally cute. you could also cut down a few 1 inch dowel rods or even use corks to put little legs on the bottom so it could sit on a bed or in your lap in a chair. Cute cute cute!
I love this idea, but i'm a bit worried about only having those little tabs to secure the center of the tray. I'd probably try to secure it a but better.
This is SUCH a good idea, and you are so cute (whoever made this)!! The only thing I would recommend is cutting down the video a bit... I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets impatient when there's a bit too much chatting :P ... Who am I to talk though, really. My generation tee video was like, 8 minutes or somthing crazy like that!! Hahha
