DIY Dreadfalls, ThreadBanger Projects

I noticed you were using a steamer. What id you don't have one of those. Whats another good tool to use. I know with senthetic hair some people say you can use just boiling water, would that work with felt?

I've learned how to make dreadfalls with nylon hair. 
first I fold the hair in half over a rubber band to create a loop, 
then I set a heavy chair leg through the rubber band (It's a lot easier  to to work with the fake hair that way). after start to boil some water, wile you wait for the water teas it or twisting it or... splitting it in half and twisting each half in opposite directions then twisting them together. Soak a wash rag in the hot water (you'll have to do it over and over to keep the rag wet and hot), set it on top of the styled dread then iron it with the rag on top of the dread. or you could just soak them into a pot of HOT water I recommend gloves to protect from the heat.  Allow them to dry by hanging them on a clothes line. I recommend spending a little more time on the ends. personally I do both. over time they will start to unravel but all you really have to do is soak them in HOT water again and they will be restored.

Ok so I'm not aloud to buy stuff online so I was wondering can I get the wool from stores such as Joanns? I couldn't find it on the site but I may have been looking up the wrong thing.

I am interested in making dreads of my own, and I have been looking at supplies... However, I have no idea of how much wool to buy! Many of the sites I am looking at seem to sell it by 1/2 oz... How many ozs of wool would you recommend to make dreads roughly the same number and size as these? Any help would be muchly appreciated! :)

Love that you did this, I was making a mermaid (again) and have decided to make this ones hair like this. (instead of how I usually make it) I didn't do the whole head like this but I did give her tiny buns and falls along with the rest of the doll wig I made. It ended up looking way cute and after I have finished her (the whole thing is hand sewn and labor intensive due to the beading and such) I will post a pic. Thanks I was in need of a new add on for this mermaid and this idea was perfect!! My favorite thing to say when asked what I am doing? "Sewin mermaids... no really, I'm sewing mermaids"

Did you know you can make a real dread in a very similar fashion? 
Basically you take your strands, tease, twist, and jab repeatedly with a very fine crochet hook. then a week of hot showers and sleepa dn it'll soften and set!
The only downside is it's not removable!
Awesome tutorial. If it wasn't working in a retiremtn home i'd dread my whole head in synthetics.

What a neat idea...never thought of felt.  I've made mine out of synthetic hair as well as yarn.

wow, great tut great fashion show, and even greater announsment! this is one of my favorite eps...and I cant wait to see the new threadbanger! this was awesome!

I actually wanted to look into needle felting, so I'm glad you guys chose to do an episode on it! On the other hand, I wish you gave a few more tips on how to create actual shapes, attaching pieces together, etc. But maybe it's a skill that's more about practice and less about following instructions?
