believe it or not Hobby Lobby has great deals. i am also a firm believer of rummaging through remnant bins at the big chain stores including WalMart. You'll be surprised at what you find!

If you're looking for something different, you might want to take a look at Favorite Fabrics http://www.favoritefabric.com ... they have a lot of novelty fabrics, so you can find fabrics that relate to unique interests (which is good if you want to make very personalized gifts).

LA has the fabric district, but by far the best buy is at FIDM Scholarship store at 9th & Grand. The fabric section is small and hidden in back but all fabric is $1 a yard. You never know what you'll find!

I too find that our JoAnn Fabrics is sorely lacking in the fabric choices I'm interested in. I live in Central NYS and we are lacking in choices - the only place I'm finding the fabric variety I love and need is on Etsy!!

Here in Eugene, OR, there is a thrift store where the profits go to save shelter animals. I am cat lady so shopping with lil kitties all around is so much fun! I get thrift store clothes and tear out the seams and mix and match. It's cheap and it is for a good cause. They also have a section of donated fabrics that you can get for cheap. Find your local thrift store. Maybe its a nonprofit for a good cause. I don't shop anywhere else!

estate sales are a good place to find some really unique vntage fabrics really cheep usually by the box...some are a little musty but a quick wash in the washing machine and they are good to go you can get tons of trim too....the farm auctions are generally a good bet most farmers wives sew :)

I like second-hand stores for fabric: bed linens (as someone else mentioned) including pillowcases and pillow shams, draperies, tablecloths and fabric napkins, skirts and dresses and tops from the XL sections. You can get good yardage out of a big, flowy skirt or the back of a man's x-large Hawaiian shirt.

FASHION DISTRICT in DOWNTOWN L.A. blocks and blocks of different types of patterns and supplies, 50% of the price at joanns sometimes even cheaper... its not online but atleast its cheaper, for those of you in los angeles. :)

We have a J&O Fabrics here in South Jersey but I get most of my fabric from Manhattan Fabrics or FashionFabric Club... i think that's what it's called. Both are online stores. I am Art. Period. I had to close a fabric store due to the economy. I have a semi-van trailer full of fabrics and sewing notions. I have bolts of prequilted fabrics of several diff colors and design. I may be able to get the organic fabric. I have alot of quilting fabrics. Let me know if I can be of any help to anyone, my prices are very reasonable.

I've bought fabric from Ikea and the cool thing about their fabric is that it's prettysturdy and it comes in awesome prints. It's cheap usually $6-$10 for it's type per yard and it comes in really cool prints. So far I've used it to make handbags, shoulder bags and wallets!

I've come across some great finds at church rummage sales- you can usually find remnants, sometimes entire bolts, and cool sheet sets and curtains to cut up too, all really cheap!

I can think of one other place....iLoveCookieParty.com We try to stock the fabric and notions that you can't find at the big chains, like knit fabrics in prints and stretch lace trim in bright colors.

Schoolhouse Fabrics in FLoyed Virginia, and old schoolhouse, now 3 sollid floors of fabric. I'm not a big sewer (I dabble) but My girlfriend is actually majoring in fashion design and I can say this place is remarkable. I like the remnants table ;D

And there is Britex Fabrics in San Francisco , with 4 floors of amazing, unique fabrics and notions. You can also order from them via their mail order service.

fabricshack.com has something like 30,000 fabrics, and they ship internationally. not to mention a *massive* store in waynesville, oh.

My grandma used to sew a lot of things for charity/to donate to childrens hospitals... so over the years word has got around, and a lot of people donate their unwanted/remnant fabric to us. A lot of it is never something I would look at and buy off the bolt, but it inspired me to make creative interesting things :)

Do you know of any suppliers that sell only organic cotton? It's really hard to find in my area of California.

These places have some great fabrics, but they're a little expensive!! Ebay, Goodwill, and yard sales are more my price!:)

I love going to discount retailers such as Ross and T.J. Maxx and raiding their bedding section. There is usually a pretty good selection of flat or fitted sheets at ridiculously cheap prices (I can't remember the last time I used a flat sheet for my bed). What's great about using them is you find some very neat and funky designs that you won't normally come across at a fabric store...
