    luv the bag

  • smudgeness wrote on February 1, 3:12 pm

There are so many ways to recycle plastic bags it make my head spin, in a good way.

I'm excited for the valentines day episode! I happen to be born on that day. ;]

  • kittymoon wrote on February 1, 4:00 pm

It was worth waiting (one week is too loooong!) I'm hopelessly addicted to your show! The bag is so cool, I'm off now, sewing... can't wait for nxt Friday - did I mention that one week is too long?

  • komirra (anon) wrote on February 1, 4:20 pm

recycling can be very cool. i loveee the idea of making your own shopping bag. the only thing that gets me is that i wouldn't put egg or meat in mt homemade bag.

  • sewthernbelle wrote in reply on February 2, 8:34 am

maybe you can use a plastic bag for a liner! You could even do some appliques that lable the bag, 'meat' and 'eggs'

  • komirra wrote in reply on February 7, 9:04 pm

hummmm..... thats a good idea. i never thought about doing that.

  • Chris Nance wrote in reply on February 16, 11:45 am

Sorry if anyone posted this already! It is NOT my original idea at all, so don't think I'm trying to pull it off as mine. Also, doing this releases some chemicals, so don't do it in your closet and huff the fumes. Be in a well ventilated area, and if you're pregnant, don't freaking do it... make someone else.

One thing you could also look into doing is taking several plastic shopping bags from any store and fuse them together. I learned about it on YouTube as well.

Here is sort of the process, as I remember it:

    - cut the handles off
    - put a piece of wax paper down
    - stack several of the bags ontop of one another and make sure that any labels on the bags are not exposed because the ink on the labels will run and cause a big mess
    - add more or less bags for thickness of material/durability of end product (3-4 would probably be a little thin, I think 6-8 would be a more sturdy fused plastic piece)
    - place another piece of wax paper ontop of them
-iron them, making sure to pay special attention to top/bottom and sides so that they don't ever unravel.
-after a few minutes of ironing them, you should check to see if it is fused well. If not, keep ironing.

Whenever you finish you now have a "Free" piece of fabric/material to work with and you can find a pattern for a recycled tote bag on the internet and make one with this new, very sturdy fabric you have.

  • baxter wrote in reply on February 28, 11:29 am

why would you iron plastic thats kinda stupid cuz it would melt

  • usedtobelieve wrote on February 1, 4:24 pm

Yea, i am tired of waiting week after week. I like looking forward to a show every other day like back in the summer !

  • ink_bottle wrote on February 1, 4:56 pm

I love the reusable bag tutorial but i would put a differnt twist on it and do some patchwork/quilting style instead or horizontal bands.
My one reccomadtion to those who try this is make sure all your components of your sewing machine are taught and you hvae strong needles. One loose foot and a flimsy needle can cause a world of frustaion... and pain if it breaks off and hit you.

  • MandyKayy wrote on February 1, 5:54 pm

    awesome video guys!

that bag tutorial was pretty awesome..and I ever really thought abotu making designs with the sewing machine.

AND OMG! yay your gonna do the v-day week XD

    lovey dovey mondays? >_>

    HI threadbangers!
I really want to know how to make a quilt. I am still a kid sorta (I act like a kid) so I want something fun and entertaining and not boring like those other internet howtos. Thanx!

  • maidensolo (anon) wrote on February 1, 9:41 pm

now, if my creativity carries through, I will be showing everyone how to make everything from clothes to hammocks out of the plastic bag itself left over from all those visits to the store. Don't throw them out. Whatever we use them for will last a long long long long time. Vue savvy?

  • kn1pl1 (anon) wrote on February 1, 10:20 pm

That was a seriously ugly bag.

  • nicjaxrox wrote in reply on February 7, 10:39 pm

I was not impressed with her bag skills either....the French bag dresses were a bit weird as well. There are so many reusable bags out there! My favorites are One Bag At A Time. They are huge in size and are very durable. I stash five in my trunk and use them everywhere!!!!

  • Raquel Bion wrote on February 1, 11:24 pm

hi, i browse ur website, and you have this paper beads, which is happily i'm doing it too, i started making in the Philippines since 1999 but i'm here in Canada right now and this is also one of my small business as well as hobby, one thing i like about this thing is that i'm helping to recycle, thou i know that i'm just sharing a little part, i'm happy still. I could email the picture of my product if you want me to, i will be more happy to do it, by the way i'm making accesories like necklace, earings, anklets, etc. thanks and regards!

  • sewthernbelle wrote on February 2, 8:32 am

wow...just got 'Roxann' two days ago so this is kinda a weird coinkidink that DH gets a mention on your show.
Meanwhile, I would be interested in shopping with reusable bags more. But usually, my rents ask me to pick up something at work and I don't have a lot of space in my locker. So I use the plastic bags. DONT STONE ME! Maybe I'll just have to figure out a way to reuse those plastic bags and maybe make a compact reusuable one...hmm...

  • NickeyRobo wrote in reply on February 7, 12:07 am

I have seen a few companies selling reusable bags made of lightweight nylon. They fold up very small (like, smaller than wallet) so you can keep them in your purse, and the nylon is very strong. Maybe threadheads could do a show on making them yourself! Maybe out of old ugly windbreakers even?

Ohhh, that's a good idea... next time I'm at the thrift store, I'm looking for windbreakers...

  • tomothecat wrote on February 2, 8:47 am

This is a cute idea... I usually use plastic bags to clean up the litter box though, and you do NOT want to use them after that.

  • AuroraMcP wrote on February 2, 9:07 am

Usually plastic bags breed like bunnies under the kitchen sink, I had made the decision to use a reusable shopping bag a while ago.. but the problem is, you've got to remember to bring them with you! *laugh*

Many of the grocery stores up here offer reusable alternatives or as one chain has done, you pay for the plastic bags or bring your own to bag yourself.

  • lisafestus wrote on February 2, 2:12 pm

Last week I spent 2 days on making 10 bags. Now I am ready to go shopping anytime with my recycled bags.Made them from old shirts(to small),bluejeans, night shirt, scrap fabric.I love them...

Hey TB! Sometime last year I found ThreadBanger and have been an avid watcher by my podcasts. So just today I realized that since your show comes out on fridays, you'll have a show coming out on my birthday! (It's next friday, the 8th.) And, I want to thank you guys for giving me a boost on my crafty side. I was always crafty, but now I'm selling it! One more thing and I'll be done. I'm thinking about setting up a website, would you guys tell people if I did? I guess thats all. Thanks!

  • Rainshadow wrote on February 2, 3:10 pm

  • Ryden wrote on February 4, 11:32 am

I use plastic bags that I get at the grocery store to throw away trash or recycling in. If I recycle all my bags what will I use as a trash can liner? Any suggestions? Sometimes I get paper bags at Whole Foods, but my regular grocery store doesn't carry them. Leaving the can unlined creates a gross icky mess.

  • matic wrote on February 5, 12:21 pm

i have a great way to make reuseable bags. A friend of mine gets the fabric samples from a furniture shop and i make really cool bags. I volunteer at a church thrift shop and i use the unsold cloth and some leather belts for the handles. I buy ends from Wal. for the linings. I have truly amazing bags. Love your episodes and like all ,wish u would give us more of your truly amazing ideas!

I have a mess of canvas bags for shopping and am trying to completely phase out the use of shopping bags. I have even started washing out my plastic food storage bags and reusing them! I must figure out a way to put my existing supply of plastic grocery bags to good use....hmmm, thinking, thinking.....(kinda hurts, ha ha)

  • lizzlemarie wrote on February 7, 9:04 pm

wow;; i checked out morsbags. and ended up doing soooo much research on the plastic pollution subject. its really sad, and quite inspiring.
i'm now seriously considering joining the morsbag cause. Soon, I'm thinking I might contact the grocery stores in town and set up a table outside of them where i would not only hand out free reuseable shopping bags, but definitely raise awareness.

Did you know that about 100,000 marine animals are killed every year just by plastic bags?! And because the bags don't decompose like the animals do, one bag that murders one animal goes on to kill many more! I discovered a lot of frightening information today. Very inspirational.

  • Bombag wrote on February 7, 9:11 pm

hey! thats cool but theres never enything 4 guys! so if u could make a sick show about cool clothes 4 guys that would b great!

I really love the segment by Rebekah Potter. I received a brand new Singer Prelude for Christmas, but haven't had the chance to try it out yet. I need thread and the space to work and dont have the funds right now to get what I want or need to work on the things that I want to work on. Potter gave me a lot of ideas thought and I will definitely be checking her out later on. Thanks, guys!

  • curleq94 wrote on February 15, 12:25 pm

do you have any advice on how to understand patters, i cut out the pieces, but i dont understand how to pin and sew it. I want to be a fashion designer, but I con not start because no one in my family nows how to really help me, and all the sewing stores were I live dont offer classes on how to use patterns.

  • curleq94 wrote on February 15, 12:26 pm

what are good sewing machine brands, i have a simple singer, but it is always getting jammed, its so annoying! What are the best brands out there that are affordable?

  • curleq94 wrote on February 15, 12:29 pm

when you iron bags together, do you put wax paper over them? wqhat setting on the iron do you prefer?

  • Katzilla wrote on February 16, 1:21 pm

OMG I can finally watch Threadbangers again!

I work at a grocery store and it breaks my heart every day when I watch so many plastic bags leave our stores, many of them being left in shopping carts and end up blowing away before we can catch them. We sell recycled shopping bags that are pretty nice, but not enough people use them, maybe one out of two hundred customers. Some people bring their own, but like I said, not enough. I would love someone to come and get rid of all of our plastic bags and force people to use paper or cloth sacks ):

  • Ruby Re-Usable wrote on February 18, 3:42 pm

this is great, I love reading about what folks are doing to reduce the amount of plastic! I use plastic bags to create sculpture, but I would be happy if I was forced to choose a different recycled material to make art when there are no more plastic bags available, until then, love, etc Ruby
