Hey Granny, Nice Glasses!

POSTED BY Blake Robinson, 16 August 2007

I live in Williamsburg -- the hipster center of the universe. The environment is such that one must often give license to the questionable appearances of one's neighbors, chalking it up to a need to distinguish oneself, kids will be kids, etc. Self-expression being what it is, it's hard to reasonably judge anyone for one's appearance due mainly to the fact that you probably look at least somewhat odd to others yourself. OK.

But sometimes a fad erupts and it's hard impossible to let it slide without spittin' some venom. I'm referring to the rofl-trend that is granny glasses. They're everywhere. I can't leave my flat without crashing into someone wearing the damned things, and I cannot with any certainty peg why people are wearing them.

I can say with large degrees of certainty that few, if any, of these people require the bifocal lenses that these frames were constructed to hold. Furthermore, I get the impression that many of the individuals wearing granny glasses don't even need glasses in the first place, it's completely aesthetic. But why? WHY?!

Please, someone explain this one to me. I like American Apparel just as much as the next kid. It makes some great shirts and such, but this is not cool. It's converting our attractive young people into grandparents. Take this poor, young victim pictured here. Her face has been besmirched by those monstrous spectacles, I only hope she was adequately compensated for such violation, because unless you're seven or 70, specs like that have no business on your face.

Question your trendsetters just as you would authority. And more importantly, always question people who want money from you (read: American Apparel), they're in business and have no problem making you look stupid in order to make money.

Ok, here's my issue with this... If you want to wear something that nobody else would normally wear, more power to you... it's called being unique... however, if you're paying $50 on a pair of "vintage" sunglasses, then you're not being unique... being unique would be finding a pair of granny glasses at goodwill and donning them because nobody else wears them and YOU think they look cool.... Buying in to some dumb market trend is stupid, no matter how cool you think you look...

The solution? Don't buy $50 specs from a company that makes t-shirts when you could find the authentic ones at a thrift shop, and actually have the satisfaction of owning the real thing...

    The end.

I have 2 pairs of 50's stye, cat eye glasses with no prescription. I bought them on sale, for 50cents each, one is black and the other red. I like them on me but I feel silly wearing glasses if I don´t need them. But that´s just me..

I think they look nice on the model pictured, and on the male model ("see this unisex item on a man"). Big glasses are quite practical for reading (as you can SEE out of them), and I have some myself... I guess I care about practicality and function over style, and I am not one for fads. But I don't understand why anyone would pay $50 for glasses with no lens, just glass, and I don't understand why anyone would wear glasses solely as a fashion accessory. Personally, I much prefer these glasses to all the little flat rectangular glasses that has been a fad for so long - I don't know how anyone can see out of those. Sure they look cool, because everybody's doing it, but they are not that great! Get the glasses (if you need them!) that work best for you! be practical! (Thanks for letting me hop in on your rant. :)

Heh. My reaction to your calling those "granny glasses" is thinking you must be about 12, since the fashion heyday of those frames was the late 70s-mid 80s--not really that long ago; more your parents' than your grandparents' era. "Granny glasses" are, to me, the ones from the 30s or 40s with wire or no rims, that stick down on the end of the nose. They were popular with some rock stars in the late 60s.

The model looks good in these frames and I don't have a problem with the style being revived. Now if it had been some of those hideous upside-down or aviator frames from the same period, *that* would've been just sad.

Oh, and I forgot--is the model Gwyneth Paltrow's sister or something?

another fad that I don't like is the plastic shoe thing.

Sadly, I am one of the few who actually does require such a thick frame for my one-step-away-from-bi-focal perscription. I also reside in Williamsburg, and am finding that I have to resort to my Nana's old frames just to see without contacts.
So don't point and yell 'Hipster!' at me as I walk to the Bedford Cheese shop for some brie + olives. I'll just be trying to see where the sidewalk ends.

Excuse me, I have bi-focals, i'm 15, and There half frames. so. there. also those frames were disgusting!!

I think she looks pretty awesome. A fad is a fad, same as any other type of clothing. This just happens to be glasses. Even if someone doesn't need them to see correctly, its still alright to wear them, because then again we don't really need to wear pants either do we?
