Say NO to the CPSIA!!!

Some of you may already be aware of this and if you aren't please read on. A new legislation called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) was recently passed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) this past August 2008. The law was intended to protect children under 12 years old from coming into contact with lead and other substances that are usually found in children's toys, clothing and furniture. Though it's great that they are looking out for the safety of children, many crafters are faced with the fear that they won't be able to stay in business due to costly tests and certification required of the proposed legislation.
According to the law, all manufacturers, whether it's Mattel or any Etsy shop owner will have to have their products tested in order to comply with this law to ensure that lead, phthlates and other harmful substances aren't found in the products. Those who don't comply will face thousands of dollars in fines and/or jail time.
Now you see what a huge deal this is for indie designers who don't have the same kind of funds are larger multi-million dollar companies. In addition to the mandatory testng, the new law also states that anything manufactured before Feb 10, 2009 that has not been tested to meet CPSC standards cannot be sold. February 10th, 2009 has been labeled “National Bankruptcy Day” by many manufactures and retailers in the industry Internationally. This doesn't only apply to indie designers, but also Vintage store / Thrift Store owners etc. Can you imagine how much stuff will end up wasted and in landfills? If this law isnt amended, many small businesses will close and only large corporations will be in existance.
Changes need to be made so please make your voice heard by signing a petition, write to and call your congress person, contact your local news stations and follow along at http://nationalbankruptcyday.com It would be a real shame to see all the lovely handmade shops, vintage shops, thrift shops, local retailers and manufactures of children’s products be forced to close their doors come February. Feel free to post any links to sites with info relating to the CPSIA and to re-post this info on your own blog.
