Book Review: Do-It-Yourself Screenprinting

This awesome book by John Isaacson is made up of his 3-part zine, which is all done comic-style. There's a detailed how-to section, and sections about selling your own screenprinted t-shirts and about working a printing job. I'd never seen a comic how-to before this, but after reading this one, I want more! He does a great job of making screenprinting seem accessible to anyone and getting you excited to try it yourself, and I think the graphic style really helps with that excitement.
In the book, in addition to the 3 zines, you'll also find several screenprinter profiles with artwork and interviews, recommended reading (since this book is more of a primer than an official manual), a glossary of terms, and a list of online resources. And besides the basic screenprinting instructions, there's info about stuff like photo emulsion, mesh count, cleaning, and a section in the back about printing on paper, color separations, cutting stencils by hand (that's the way I do it!), and squeegie moves.
I love Zum Comics' review of the book on the back cover, that it "has an infectious gleeful enthusiasm for the subject which sweeps you along, making you want to join in."
Do-It-Yourself Screenprinting is published by a great independent publisher and zine distro, Microcosm, and can be found on their website, as well as Buy Olympia's, or maybe in an independent bookstore near you!
