Book Review: Knitprovisation

This beautiful work by Cilla Ramnek is definitely one of my all time favorite inspiring craft books, just to look through and get the creative juices flowing. But be aware, tutorial lovers, it's less of a how-to book and more of an art book.

The projects are all accompanied by simple instructions, instead of traditional patterns, to encourage custom design and personalization, which I love!!

While the word knit is in the title and is a major element, there is also lots of crochet, sewing with felted sweaters, and embellishing ready-made items. I absolutely love this improvisationally embroidered felted sweater vest!

The gorgeous, large photos really make this book stand out to me; detailed step-by-step tutorials aren't important when the items are shown well enough that you can see how they are put together.

I also love the repeated mention of thrift store shopping throughout the book. The hood below was originally a thrift store find, to which the crocheted edging was added. Mixing up secondhand items, knit, crochet, embroidery, etc results in some amazing finished objects!!

While I get plenty of inspiration just looking at the photos in this book, reading it brings me even more creative energy, with motivational writing like:
There's no reason to be too critical of the irresistible urge to buy a ball or two of yarn in you happen to be passing a yarn shop nowadays. If the two sides of your brain are arguing and the sensible side is demanding a crystal-clear answer as to what the purchase "is going to be," then the other side just has to stand its ground. Who knows? These one or two particular balls of wool could be the inspiration for a masterpiece! Honestly! How great is that? When I read that Ramnek "sees no conflict between design, craft, and art, and moves freely across the disciplines" I knew that this is a woman after my own heart! I highly recommend this book to anyone in need of some creative motivation!! Find it online, or at your favorite local bookstore!
