Celebrity DIY Style: Coraline

Movie goers may be buzzing about the new hit, Coraline, but it's also attracted another group - crafters. Not only does the stop-motion animation interest model makers, but the costumes designed by Margaret Meyer and knitted by Paloma Soledad has everyone talking... especially those teeny tiny sweaters! If knitting miniatures isn't for you (you can make a child size version of Coraline's sweater with this free pattern), there are plenty of other small scale projects to be sewn - a behind the scene look at how the movie was made and a peek at some of the costumes can be seen in articles by Animation World Magazine and MetropolisMag and these "Crafting the World of Coraline" videos at Rotton Tomatoes. So how do you go about creating your own mini-costumes? If you looking for a minimal investment, try sewing patterns made by Simplicity, Butterick, McCall, and Vogue which range from Barbie to American Girl size clothing. A slightly more costly approach would be Japanese Craft books devoted to sewing and knitting fashionable garments and costumes for Barbie, Blythe, Tiny Betsy McCall, DAL and others. Probably the most popular is Dolly Doll(y) magazine, however there are a handful of other titles available such as the Stylebook of Doll Dresses and Doll Fashion (Japan) all of which are available on eBay, etsy, and a variety of online retailers who specialize in Japanese imports.
