Book Review: Apron•ology
The folks that publish Belle Armoire and Altered Couture magazines have created a fantabulous new publication, Apron•ology. As you may have guessed, this mag’s all things apron. From funky and punky, to lacy and super-girly, apron•ology has lots of apron examples that are super-inspiring!
Stampington & Company magazines are not quite “how-to” magazines. Instead, each article serves as a “jumping-off” point for unique creations. In Apron•ology, there’s a range of sewing skill levels represented, as well as styles. Some artists, like Jennifer Jackson, use vintage fabric and doilies for über-romantic creations, and others are like Pam Sisler, who recycled her black leather-like coat into her new “Motorcycle Mama” biker-inspired apron. Men’s pants legs, felting, recycled cashmere, men’s ties, a recycled vinyl poster, stamping, painting, mixed media, embroidery, patchwork, tons of tulle, shells, beads, and other baubles…anything goes! Want sock monkeys, gothic glamour, mermaids? Cowgirl chic? Kitschy chickens? If you can dream it, it can be an apron!
I think plenty of ThreadBangers will especially get a kick out of “Tea with Mrs. Lovett” by Calamity Kim (pg. 50), the “Flower Fairy Apron” by Jessica N. Ortiz (pg. 54), and the “Newsprint Apron” (which, yes, is made out of newspaper!) by Olivia Thomas (pg. 136). If you miss out on this issue, the next will be published September 15, 2009! How cool would it be to have a ThreadBanger rock his or her apron next fall?!
Apron•ology, Stampington & Company, Vol.1, Issue 1. .99 US, .99 CAN.
Janice S. Bees, aka ladyjanewriter, is a moderator for the ThreadBanger forums, and is currently addicted to making aprons and t-shirt beanies. She loves to sew, do mixed-media artwork, tap dance, and talk to squirrels (but not at the same time!). She truly believes that no question is ever too “stoooopid” to ask! *snip-snip*
