omgggg

I just did my first pattern last year.  I think it is good to know how to do them, but I am not patient enough to continue using them!  They take forever, and I would rather just cut and sew where ever I feel like it!  Although, some of my stuff turns out pretty funny......maybe that's why?  ;o)

Yeah, patterns can be very un-inviting to say the least. I have mademy own patterns as a beginer sewer and as a design student..so it helped by learning how to make your own and then perfect your own..store bought patterns for me are like what veryone esle has used them for..basic better guidelibnes then my own or adaptaions of what i really was going for. I love burdastyle and discovered the site in nov. around the same time i found thread bangers!! you both rock and i enjoy looking at what the rest of the world is sewing up besides me! 

I've been using patterns for years now...but every now and again I go "Uh Wha??" Then I hit the speed dial for my mother and ask her what it means....is that wrong of me?
I'm usually pretty confident using patters, I like that list of directions. But, I getting ready to move onto my own parts and pieces. I find it more intimidating.

I've been using patterns since I was 12 or so. (Don't ask how long ago that was.) After years of this, I can adapt a pattern to make my own thing pretty easily, with a confidence I might not feel if I hadn't started with patterns. Kind of like in that old adage about art where you have to know the rules to break the rules successfully. I don't know if it's true for everyone, but it has worked for me with sewing. 
With knitting, I feel more comfortable doing hats, mitts, scarves with no pattern, but I like a pattern (at least as a starting point) for sweaters.
Speaking of knitting, Corinne, is the pattern for your scarf (the gray one in this episode) available?? I'd love to make one.

I havent even bothered with patterns in a while. Im usually modifying old clothes from goodwill more than anything. If your note using the clothes for fabric then you dont really need patterns all to much.

All I can say about professional patterns (the ones you actually pay money for) is follow those directions to the letter.  Once you've mastered the techniques then you can stray from the formula.  

Patterns can be very intimidating. I make my own patterns a lot, but sometimes I want to do something that stretches my abilities so I have to turn to a pattern. I usually adapt them to make them easier, and quicker. I don't think I've ever followed a pattern to the letter. I'm going to try one of those Burda Style ones, they look fun. 

Although... wrapping presents with pattern paper sounds actually very cool too...
