Kenneth Cole's Alternative Advertising

"We all walk in different shoes..." This is the basis of Kenneth Cole's new alternative advertising in which he explains," We all have a role in life, but only a few people dare to rewrite the script. Join us to celebrate those individuals who have the courage to redefine their roles and be true to themselves."
Although I resent this statement, for its accusing and elitist tone in words like those and only a few, which imply that I as a reader, have never done such a thing as redefine my role. After watching the the interviews, the arrogance of Kenneth Cole receded and I was nearly brought to tears. The campaign photographs five individuals who have lived different lives, and by "different lives" I don't mean "off-beat" or "even unique" but different from what they planned, wanted, dreamed...
A woman with ovarian cancer, an African American born with Albinism, a transgendered artist, a punk evangelist, and an orthodox Jew who found God in Bob Marley. But what exactly is Kenneth Cole trying to say? The definition of different? That same-ness doesn't exist? What is strength? Oppresion? Love? Modernity? America? Watch the interviews and see the campaign to judge for yourselves.
